HANSENS’ GAMBLE PAYS OFF: CRAB HAUL SOARS AFTER RISKY MOVE WEST

The Northwestern’s fortunes took a dramatic turn this week after a tense gamble by Captain Sig Hansen and his daughter Mandy nearly sank their season—only to rebound with one of the best hauls of the trip.

Early optimism on the Sombrero grounds quickly evaporated as Sig and Mandy found their gear picked clean by rival boats. “Not even a two average,” Mandy admitted grimly. “That sucked. We should pick it up and get out of here.”

With pots coming up empty, Mandy called in a favor from fellow captain Jake Anderson. Jake’s tip pointed them west into the gullies, where he claimed he was hauling steady 35s.

“I don’t know if you can trust his intel,” Sig warned, wary of chasing rumors. “A lot of guys brag on one good pot.”

But Mandy stuck to her instincts. “I’ve got faith in Jake,” she insisted, steering the Northwestern toward untested grounds.

EARLY DOUBTS, LATE REWARD

The first pots were discouraging. “They’re all female,” Sig muttered, frustration clear. But as the crew hauled deeper into the string, the tide began to turn.

“There might be a couple more in it,” deckhand Clark noted. “They’re big.”

Then came the jackpot. Pot after pot delivered heavy numbers, with one hitting a season-high 69 keepers.

“Sixty-nine, feeling fine!” a jubilant Mandy shouted over the roar of the deck crew. “That’s exactly what we needed.”

FAMILY, TRUST, AND HIGH STAKES

The haul not only bolstered the Northwestern’s season but also highlighted the evolving partnership between Sig and his daughter.

“I know I’ve shown a lack of trust,” Sig admitted afterward. “But at the end of the day, we got intel from us, we got intel from him. Sixty-plus average—it’s a win-win.”

Mandy’s gamble may have secured the Northwestern’s place in the fleet for now, but the season is far from over. With quotas still looming large, every decision on the high seas remains a high-stakes bet.

As Sig put it bluntly: “Not too shabby. But we’ve got a long way to go before we get to our year. Hope it holds.”
