Alaska Crab Crew Faces Danger: Rope Smashes Deckhand Amid 25-Foot Waves
Dutch Harbor, Alaska – A perilous two-week stretch in the Bering Sea tested the mettle of the Time Bandit crew as they raced against a massive low-pressure storm system to secure a critical haul of golden king crab.
Captain Jonathan, steering the vessel 250 miles northwest of Dutch Harbor, faced winds exceeding 45 mph and waves towering up to 25 feet, threatening both the crew and their catch. “Strap in, old buddy. Hopefully it blows through quick. It’s all we can do,” Jonathan said as the storm barreled toward the Golden King and Barai grounds.
Despite treacherous conditions, including icy decks, mechanical failures, and equipment malfunctions, the team pressed on. A blown steering hose left the vessel momentarily helpless, while rogue waves tossed pots and crew members across the deck. Crewman Chino was briefly injured, but luckily sustained no serious harm.
“The waves hit hard, but we can’t stop. I’ve got to get these pots on crab,” Jonathan said. Each string of pots required careful maneuvering to prevent loss, with the crew improvising on deck amid frozen, slippery conditions.
Even the anchor nearly fell victim to the storm, requiring precise handling of 18,000 lbs of crab and maneuvering just 100 yards from shore. With ingenuity and teamwork, the crew secured the anchor and continued their haul.
The drama didn’t end until the crew reached Dutch Harbor to offload their catch. Competition with other vessels, including Sig Hansen’s Northwestern, added tension to the already grueling haul. Quick ice dumping and careful coordination allowed the Time Bandit to stay ahead and safely offload the crab before the storm worsened.
In the end, the crew endured exhaustion, frost, and near-disasters to secure their catch and survive one of the most dangerous hauls of the season. Jonathan praised his crew, saying, “We’ve been through hell and back already. Hopefully, we find consistent numbers and can get home safely.”
The Bering Sea continues to test the limits of man and machine, but for now, the Time Bandit has weathered the storm—literally and figuratively.
