Moonshiners’ Mark and Digger Reeling After $11,000 Batch of Shine Vanishes
A late-night stop meant to prevent a tragedy turned into a nightmare for one hauler, as an entire van loaded with over $100,000 worth of premium liquor was reportedly cleaned out sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning.
The theft occurred at a roadside hotel between Jackson and Memphis, where the driver—identified only as “Bees”—pulled over after realizing he was too tired to continue safely on Interstate 40. “I was falling asleep at the wheel,” he said. “It was either end up in a ditch or get a room.”
Bees left the liquor-laden van parked outside the hotel, unaware that a costly crime was about to unfold. By morning, the vehicle remained, but the valuable cargo was gone.
A Haul Gone Missing
The stolen goods, estimated at $111,000, consisted of a high-end liquor shipment bound for an undisclosed retailer. Authorities have not released a full inventory, but insiders say the load included rare bourbons, imported scotch, and top-shelf tequila—all items known to attract quick resale on the black market.
Bees expressed shock and disbelief. “Please tell me you’re joking,” he said when first informed of the disappearance. Unfortunately, the reality has since been confirmed by responding law enforcement.
Targeted Hit or Crime of Opportunity?
While it’s unclear whether the theft was random or premeditated, cargo theft experts say this stretch of I-40 is a known hotspot. “You park a high-value load near an exit ramp, you’re a sitting duck,” one industry veteran noted.
Bees, however, believes he had been cautious on the road, avoiding suspicious drivers and obeying all traffic laws. “I’ve been so key on watching traffic, not speeding, not drifting lanes,” he said. “But I guess someone was watching me.”
Interstate Crime on the Rise
Law enforcement has confirmed that cargo theft incidents along I-40 have been rising. “It’s organized crime, a lot of the time,” said one Tennessee State Trooper who spoke under condition of anonymity. “They follow trucks. They wait for a slip-up.”
Investigators are now reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and hotel cameras, hoping to identify any suspicious vehicles or persons spotted near the van overnight.
Industry Reacts
Hauling professionals across the region expressed sympathy and frustration. “He did the right thing—he pulled over for safety,” one Memphis-based driver commented. “And now he’s out six figures of inventory. That’s just sickening.”
Some are calling for increased surveillance in hotel lots frequented by commercial drivers, as well as legislative action to address the rise in targeted cargo theft.
Next Steps
The van has been taken in for forensic examination. As of press time, no suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made.
Meanwhile, Bees is left grappling with the consequences of one night’s rest. “I just wanted to stay alive,” he said. “Now it feels like everything else got taken instead.”
