Popular TV star slams Clarkson’s Farm for this reason

BBC Countryfile presenter Adam Henson has spoken out about Clarkson’s Farm, offering both praise and pointed criticism of Jeremy Clarkson’s hit Prime Video series.

The 58-year-old farmer and broadcaster, who lives on his Cotswolds Farm Park estate with his wife Charlie, has hosted Countryfile since 2001 and is one of Britain’s most recognisable voices in agriculture. Surrounded by high-profile neighbours including Jeremy Clarkson, Ellen DeGeneres, and David Beckham, Henson is no stranger to the media spotlight—but his latest remarks about Clarkson’s show have drawn attention.

Speaking on the farming podcast Grounded, Henson acknowledged that Clarkson’s Farm had done wonders for public engagement with agriculture, saying:

“I agree that Clarkson’s Farm has been a huge success, opening the eyes of many people into agriculture that wouldn’t have otherwise watched it.”

However, he also expressed concern that the program paints an overly bleak picture of the farming industry.

“He spends a huge amount of money. He’s up against planning, he’s up against the weather, he’s up against disease, and he spends a fortune on a tractor. And at the end of the year, he makes diddly squat,” Henson said. “When actually, I know lots of farmers who are incredibly successful, who are farming their land in a really positive way.”

While recognising the value of showing the struggles farmers face, Henson suggested the show leans too heavily on hardship and failure, rather than reflecting the resilience and successes of Britain’s farming community.

Despite his critique, he was careful to balance his comments, adding that it’s “good” that programmes like Clarkson’s Farm raise awareness of the realities of agriculture.

“There are lots of difficult things in farming, including mental health issues,” he said. “It’s tough—but there are plenty of positives that deserve to be shown, too.”

Henson’s comments highlight a growing debate in the agricultural world: whether Clarkson’s Farm—known for its humour, chaos, and authenticity—represents the everyday reality of farming, or simply Jeremy Clarkson’s unique, larger-than-life version of it.
