JEREMY CLARKSON CLEARS UP CONFUSION OVER DIDDLY SQUAT FARM SHOP’S ‘DOG RULE’

Television presenter and farmer Jeremy Clarkson has taken to social media to clarify a little-known rule at his world-famous Diddly Squat Farm Shop, after a fan’s innocent post sparked debate among followers.

The 65-year-old star of Top Gear and The Grand Tour, who reinvented himself as a full-time farmer through the hit Prime Video series Clarkson’s Farm, explained that dogs are not permitted inside the Diddly Squat Farm Shop — and the reason has nothing to do with personal preference. It’s all down to, as Clarkson put it, “Government rules.”

THE POST THAT STARTED IT ALL

The discussion began when a visitor to the farm shared a heartwarming photo on X (formerly Twitter) earlier this week. The picture showed her small dog resting patiently in her arms as she queued outside the ever-busy Diddly Squat Farm Shop.

Her caption read:

“Tired little doggy waiting in the queue for the farm shop.”

Clarkson, who is known for his often fiery but occasionally sentimental online presence, responded in typically understated fashion, replying with a simple:

“Aww.”

But soon, another social media user jumped in with a correction:

“Dogs aren’t allowed in Diddly Squat Farm Shop.”

Rather than ignore the exchange, Clarkson took the time to clear up the confusion directly, replying:

“Government rules.”

The response immediately caught the attention of fans, many of whom hadn’t realized that food safety regulations — not Clarkson’s own policies — were the reason for the rule.

WHY DOGS CAN’T ENTER THE SHOP

While Diddly Squat Farm Shop has become a must-visit destination for Clarkson’s Farm fans and countryside enthusiasts, it’s still bound by the same hygiene and safety laws as any other business selling fresh produce and food items.

Under UK Government health and safety regulations, dogs and other animals are generally prohibited from entering areas where unsealed food is displayed or handled. The rule is designed to maintain cleanliness and prevent contamination in food preparation or retail areas.

The only exceptions, as Clarkson’s followers were quick to point out, are guide dogs and registered assistance animals, which are legally allowed in such premises.

Although some visitors were disappointed to learn that their four-legged friends couldn’t browse the shelves of the shop itself, many praised Clarkson’s openness and humor in explaining the rule, with one fan replying, “Fair enough, Jeremy — the government’s barking mad sometimes.”

A FARM SHOP THAT BECAME A NATIONAL ATTRACTION

Opened in 2020 by Clarkson and his partner Lisa Hogan, Diddly Squat Farm Shop sits on the grounds of the couple’s 1,000-acre farm in Chadlington, West Oxfordshire. It quickly became one of the region’s most recognizable landmarks, drawing thousands of fans every month hoping to catch a glimpse of the celebrity farmer or his team.

The shop is famed for its witty product names and locally sourced goods — from “Cow Juice” (milk) and “Bee Juice” (honey) to “Jeremy’s Hot Sausage” and “Hawkstone Lager,” brewed using barley grown on Clarkson’s own fields.

Despite its humble beginnings as a shed stocked with homemade produce, Diddly Squat Farm Shop now attracts international visitors and frequently causes traffic jams along the narrow Cotswolds lanes that lead to it.

THE BRAND EXPANDS: THE FARMER’S DOG PUB

In August 2024, Clarkson and Hogan expanded their rural brand with the opening of The Farmer’s Dog, a traditional-style pub in the nearby village of Asthall. The couple launched the venue with a pop-up version of Diddly Squat Farm Shop on the grounds, offering visitors a chance to enjoy a pint of Hawkstone Lager before purchasing the farm’s signature goods.

The pub’s opening drew large crowds, with Clarkson himself pouring pints behind the bar during its opening weekend. The combination of the pub and pop-up shop proved a hit, cementing the Diddly Squat name as one of the Cotswolds’ most successful tourist ventures.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR CLARKSON’S FARM

Meanwhile, excitement continues to build for the upcoming fifth season of Clarkson’s Farm. Filming officially wrapped in October 2025, and the show is currently in post-production.

Although Amazon Prime Video has yet to announce an exact release date, it’s widely expected that Season 5 will premiere in spring 2026, following the same release pattern as previous seasons.

Fans can look forward to more of the show’s signature blend of humor, heart, and hard lessons in farming life. Returning cast members are expected to include Clarkson’s loyal team: Kaleb Cooper, his quick-witted but fiery farmhand; Lisa Hogan, who manages much of the farm’s business side; Charlie Ireland, the pragmatic land agent who keeps Clarkson in check; and Gerald Cooper, the hard-to-understand but ever-lovable wall builder.

FROM TV STAR TO FARMER — AND BACK AGAIN

Since purchasing Diddly Squat Farm in 2008, Clarkson has become one of Britain’s most unlikely champions of modern agriculture. His foray into farming began as a personal experiment after the farmer who managed his land retired. But what started as a tongue-in-cheek adventure has grown into a heartfelt mission — to highlight the challenges real farmers face in the UK.

Through Clarkson’s Farm, he’s earned respect not just as a television entertainer, but as an advocate for rural communities, shining a light on the red tape, weather challenges, and financial struggles that come with the job.

So, while visitors may have to leave their dogs outside when shopping for jam or Hawkstone beer, Clarkson’s latest clarification shows that even the smallest details at Diddly Squat Farm are handled with the same mix of practicality and humor that has made both the show — and the farm itself — a national phenomenon.

“Government rules,” Clarkson wrote — and for once, fans seemed to agree: even at Diddly Squat, some things are just out of his hands.
