Wild Bill Wichrowski Opens Up About Beating Prostate Cancer: “I’m Not Stopping”
Captain “Wild” Bill Wichrowski, the fearless skipper of the Summer Bay on Deadliest Catch, has shared a deeply encouraging update about his health — one that fans have been anxiously awaiting since his prostate cancer diagnosis.
The veteran fisherman, known for his sharp wit and tough-as-nails leadership, took to Facebook to reveal that his treatment is showing excellent progress. “Numbers are great. Not complaining — purely for information,” he wrote. Wichrowski explained that he is currently undergoing a combination of radioactive seed implants and hormone therapy as part of his ongoing battle.
While the treatments have been demanding, he’s remained optimistic and transparent with fans. “Testosterone drops to near zero by design. I seem to be cancer-free now,” he announced, before reflecting on the toll the therapy has taken on his energy and physical resilience. “I have always felt 10-15 years younger than my age. The job I have, being around crew half my age — feels like the clock has caught up. Maybe a small price to pay.”
His words carried both humility and strength, ending with a heartfelt message to followers: “Thanks for concern and best wishes. If you have symptoms, get checked.” Supporters quickly flooded the comments with gratitude, prayers, and admiration for the captain’s courage in sharing his journey so candidly.
Wichrowski first revealed his prostate cancer diagnosis during the Season 19 finale of Deadliest Catch in 2023. The moment was raw and emotional, marking one of the few times fans saw the seasoned mariner visibly shaken. Cameras followed him through the early stages of treatment into Season 20, which aired in 2024, documenting both the physical and emotional challenges of fighting the disease while continuing to lead his crew through the perilous Bering Sea.
“When I heard it,” he recalled in the Deadliest Catch Season 20 preview, “one of the things I thought was, ‘You know what? I’m not going to stop fishing. I’m going to keep going until I actually can’t.’ How many people get diagnosed with this and they just shut down and crawl into a shell? And it just makes it worse.”
His decision to let Discovery’s cameras chronicle his battle was, in his own words, about more than television — it was about hope. “The fact that I allowed the news to be broadcast, I heard from a million people — ‘Oh, I hope you’re alright.’ They’re saying you’re gonna have all these symptoms that are gonna stop you. And I said, ‘There’s no way.’”
By showing his journey openly, Wichrowski wanted to send a message to others facing similar diagnoses. “I was hoping that the fact that I kept going, it would show people that if you have this, you can keep working. You can keep your life moving. I wasn’t going to stop unless I had to.”
Since joining Deadliest Catch in Season 13 back in 2017, Captain “Wild” Bill has become one of the series’ most respected figures — a man who embodies the grit, humor, and unbreakable will that define the life of an Alaskan crab fisherman. His recent update not only brings relief to fans but also stands as a testament to his resilience.
With Deadliest Catch Season 20 having wrapped in October 2024, anticipation is already building for Season 21, premiering Friday, August 1, 2025, at 8/7c on Discovery. And if Wild Bill’s fighting spirit is any indication, viewers can expect to see him right where he belongs — back on the bridge of the Summer Bay, steering through rough seas and proving once again that nothing, not even cancer, can keep a true fisherman down.
