Unexpected Vet Alert Leaves Kelvin Fletcher Rattled on Fletcher’s Family Farm

Emmerdale star Kelvin Fletcher faced an emotional setback in the latest episode of his ITV farming series Fletcher’s Family Farm, after receiving unexpected and worrying news about one of his young calves.

Kelvin, along with his wife Liz Marsland, has been documenting their real-life transition from actors to full-time farmers since 2022. Now in their fourth year of rural living, the couple and their four children return once again to the Royal Cheshire Show, where they hope their beloved bull calf Ray will shine in competition.

But the excitement took a sudden turn. Just one day before Ray was due to step into the ring, Kelvin revealed that the calf had “taken a turn,” prompting him to call in on-site vet Matt for an urgent assessment. Kelvin admitted he was already uneasy, confessing he was in “two minds” about allowing Ray to compete after noticing the calf struggling to settle in the busy exhibitors’ tent.

A temperature check quickly confirmed Kelvin’s concerns. Ray was running a fever of 103 degrees Fahrenheit, higher than the ideal 101.5 degrees for cattle. Vet Matt immediately recognised the signs.

“He’s had quite a bit of stress,” Matt explained. “It’s the journey, it’s the atmosphere of the show. That heightened level of stress chips away at their immunity, and he’s just started with a bit of pneumonia.”

Although the diagnosis initially sounded alarming, Matt reassured Kelvin that pneumonia in cattle is far more common—and far less dangerous—than it tends to be in humans.

“Farmers will hear the term ‘pneumonia’ and it feels quite alarmist,” he said. “With humans, we don’t usually describe something as pneumonia unless someone is very seriously ill. But in cattle, we see it quite often.”

To get Ray back on track, Matt administered an anti-inflammatory injection to help reduce the fever and ease inflammation in his chest, along with a single-dose antibiotic. The vet then advised Kelvin to give Ray space and quiet time to decompress, lowering the calf’s stress levels while the medication got to work.

Looking on at his unwell calf, Kelvin admitted how shaken he felt by the sudden change. “Poor Ray,” he sighed. “It’s an incredibly rough start to this year’s show. I’m really hoping the medicine takes effect soon, and Matt will be back first thing to see how he’s faring.”

Later, while gently comforting Ray, Kelvin reflected on how easily the situation could have escalated unnoticed. “That’s a bit of a turn of events, really,” he said. “It shows what the experienced farmers know. It’s a good job they alerted me, because I would have absolutely missed that. Looks like we got in just in time. I’m feeling a bit surprised—I was not expecting this. You’ve just got to roll with the punches, haven’t you?”

With Ray’s health now the top priority, Kelvin told viewers he would wait until the next morning to decide whether the calf was well enough to compete. His focus, he stressed, was ensuring Ray made a full recovery rather than chasing any show-day glory.

Fans will have to tune in to the next episode to see whether Ray rallies in time to make his debut in the ring.

Fletcher’s Family Farm continues Sundays at 11:30am on ITV1 and ITVX.
