Josh Owens Returns to the Hills as Moonshiners Season 15 Marks a New Chapter

After a long and difficult recovery from a serious motorcycle accident, Josh Owens is back on screen in Moonshiners Season 15, determined to rebuild both his livelihood and his sense of purpose.

For Owens, the new season is not simply a continuation of past work. It represents a deliberate return to the mountains that shaped his family history and his identity. Raised on stories of ancestors who pulled both gold and liquor from the same Appalachian terrain, Owens sees his latest venture as a blend of tradition and opportunity — producing moonshine while exploring long-held family ground for gold.

The accident that sidelined him changed his outlook. Recovery was slow and uncertain, forcing Owens to confront the possibility that he might never return to the physically demanding work that defines life in the hills. Season 15 finds him healthy enough to work again, openly grateful for the chance to resume what he calls his “roots,” and visibly more focused than in previous years.

That focus extends to how he operates. Owens has invited longtime friend and fellow shiner Chuck to help establish a new still site, completing a partnership that began years earlier when Owens travelled south to assist Chuck with his own operation. Their reunion is friendly, but the stakes are clear. With heightened law enforcement pressure following close calls involving other shiners last season, Owens is cautious about every decision.

“This time, I want someone I trust watching my back,” he explains on the show.

The chosen site offers seclusion, natural cover and access to clean spring water — essential ingredients for any successful moonshine run. Even so, Owens acknowledges that no location is truly secure. One unexpected visitor or careless mistake could bring serious consequences, ending his return before it fully begins.

Alongside the risks is a significant business opportunity. Owens has secured a large order for cherry rye, a recipe closely tied to his family’s past. On his grandfather’s side, cherry whiskey was once a recognised name, and Owens believes the demand still exists. Reintroducing it could restore both income and reputation in a single move.

As preparations move forward, conversations shift from recovery to ambition. Grain orders are discussed, equipment plans refined and expectations raised. Yet beneath the optimism lies an awareness of how unforgiving the mountains can be — physically, legally and financially.

Season 15 presents Owens not as someone chasing novelty, but as a man intent on proving that a difficult chapter did not define the end of his story. Whether his return leads to lasting success or renewed hardship remains to be seen, but for now, Josh Owens is back where he believes he belongs — testing whether determination, heritage and a second chance are enough to carry him forward in the hills he calls home.
