Its reputation only grew as it braved storms, rescued survivors, and outlasted countless rivals. By the time Deadliest Catch premiered in 2005, the Cornelia Marie was already a legend. Under Captain Phil Harris, it became a star.
The Rise and Fall of a Captain
Phil Harris’s story was as raw as the seas he conquered. Raised in Washington, he began fishing as a child and fought his way up from deckhand to boat owner. Known for his iron will, hard living, and unmatched work ethic, Harris embodied the grit that defined the crab fleet.
But behind his success lay demons—addiction, health scares, and family struggles. After suffering a stroke in 2010 while offloading crab at St. Paul Island, Phil passed away at just 53. His death devastated fans and left his sons, Josh and Jake, scrambling to carry on the family legacy.

For a time, Josh Harris kept the Cornelia Marie afloat, eventually co-captaining with Casey McManus. But everything changed in August 2022. A long-buried court record revealed that Josh, as a teenager, had committed a serious crime against a child.
Though he had served time decades earlier, the revelation shocked fans and executives alike. Discovery Channel reacted immediately—pulling Deadliest Catch: Bloodline and erasing the Cornelia Marie from their programming. Overnight, a cornerstone of the series vanished, scrubbed from streaming services and promotional materials.
The fallout was swift and brutal. A boat once synonymous with resilience and survival was now shadowed by scandal.
A Vessel Without a Home
Financial troubles had long haunted the Harris family. Maintaining the aging 1989-built vessel required constant investment, and the pandemic only worsened the strain. Josh himself once admitted the boat was “a black hole for money.”
But in 2024, the Cornelia Marie found a new beginning. A group led by Taylor Jensen, Roger Thomas, Carrie Toya, and Jake Albinino purchased the vessel. With Albinino at the helm, the new owners vowed to honor the boat’s history while steering clear of past controversies.
Their mission: return the Cornelia Marie to what it was always meant to be—a working crab boat, free from television drama.
