Deadliest Catch

“Deadliest Catch” star Todd Meadows’ cause of death revealed

More than a month after the tragedy that shocked fans of one of television’s most dangerous shows, the official cause of death for Deadliest Catch deckhand Todd Meadows has been confirmed.

Meadows died from “drowning with probable hypothermia” and “submersion of body in cold water,” according to his death certificate obtained by TMZ. The 25-year-old died on Feb. 25 after falling overboard while working on the fishing vessel Aleutian Lady, located approximately 170 miles north of Dutch Harbor in Alaska.

The Final Moments

Meadows, who had joined the vessel in May 2025, was reportedly sorting crabs inside a shellfish pot in the Bering Sea when he went overboard. A fellow deckhand and cast member, Trey John Green III, described the chaotic moments that followed. He was recovered ten minutes later and, being unresponsive, was given first aid by his fellow crew members as they attempted to resuscitate him. Unfortunately, it was too late.

Meadows was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m. on Feb. 25. His manner of death was ruled accidental, and his body was cremated after being transported back to Anchorage, Alaska.

Meadows’ fatal fall reportedly occurred shortly after he returned to the Aleutian Lady following time off to recover from a concussion. The show was nearing the end of filming for its 22nd season when the accident happened.

The Captain’s Tribute

Captain Rick Shelford announced Meadows’ death on March 2 via Facebook, calling that day “the most tragic day in the history of the Aleutian Lady on the Bering Sea.”

“Todd was the newest member of our crew, he quickly became family. His love for fishing and his strong work ethic earned everyone’s respect right away. His smile was contagious, and the sound of his laughter coming up the wheelhouse stairs or over the deck hailer is something we will carry with us always,” Shelford wrote.

Shelford’s tribute continued: “Todd will forever be part of this boat, this crew, and this brotherhood. Though we lost him far too soon, his legacy will live on through his children and in every memory we carry of him. Rest easy brother, till we meet again.”

Family Speaks Out

Meadows’ family has been vocal both in mourning and in drawing boundaries around how his death should be handled by the network. His mother, Angela Meadows, told TMZ that she does not want the footage of her son’s fall to be televised, and does not wish to see it herself. “We hope they only air good things of Todd on that boat,” she said.

His partner, Kennady Harvey, with whom he shared children, also paid tribute, writing: “Thank you for the tribute to my children’s father. He absolutely loved the brotherhood of fishing. I will never let his children forget him.”

His grandmother, Connie Lambert, shared: “I also lift up those Men that were on the same ship you were on! I also lift up the United States Coast Guard for everything they did to save you!”

Background and Legacy

A native of Montesano, Washington, Meadows began working as a deckhand on the Aleutian Lady in May 2025. He is survived by his three young children. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that Meadows’ death remains under investigation.

A GoFundMe campaign launched to support his family has raised over $56,000. Discovery Channel issued a statement expressing sorrow over the loss, calling it “a devastating loss” and extending condolences to his loved ones, crewmates, and the broader fishing community.

Deadliest Catch is produced by Fremantle’s Original Productions and follows vessels on the dangerous Bering Sea chasing hauls of Alaskan king crab. Season 21 concluded in fall 2025, with Season 22 expected to air in 2026. It remains unclear how — or whether — Meadows’ story will be depicted in the upcoming season.
