Clarkson’s Farm star Harriet Cowan opens up about nasty accident that left her needing surgery

Harriet Cowan, one of the breakout figures from Clarkson’s Farm, has shared fresh details about a painful off-screen injury that left her needing hospital treatment earlier this year.

The Derbyshire farmer, who won over viewers during her brief but memorable run on the Prime Video series, revealed that she suffered what she described as a nasty accident involving a log splitter. The incident, which happened away from the cameras, resulted in the top of one of her fingers being cut off before doctors were able to stitch it back on.

Cowan, 24, joined Clarkson’s Farm during its fourth season after stepping in to help Jeremy Clarkson while regular fan favourite Kaleb Cooper was away on tour. Although her time on the Oxfordshire farm was temporary, she quickly became a popular addition with audiences, many of whom praised her confidence, humour and no-nonsense approach to farm work. Even though she left midway through the series once her help was no longer required, her short stint made a clear impression on viewers.

Back in February, Cowan first told followers about the accident in a candid Instagram update. She explained that she had been taken to hospital after a run-in with a log splitter left her badly injured.

Sorry, I’ve been quiet, she wrote at the time. Been a c****y week, had a run in with a log splitter, chopped the end of my finger off, but a quick surgery, they stitched it back on. Lambing starts now. A big thank you to the amazing team at Pulvertaft Hand Clinic.

Now, in a new interview published by The Times on Wednesday, April 15, Cowan has revisited the incident and offered a clearer description of what happened. She said a log fell out of the splitter and landed directly on her finger, taking the top off.

She told the newspaper: I had a nastyish accident earlier this year: a log fell out of the log splitter and landed on my finger, taking the top off. I won’t have a real nail on there, but I haven’t got one on the finger next to it either. A sheep pulled it off.

The comments reflect the often harsh and unpredictable reality of life on a working farm, where even routine tasks can quickly turn dangerous. Cowan’s matter-of-fact retelling also underlines the resilience that many viewers admired during her time on Clarkson’s Farm. Her popularity on the show came in part from the way she handled demanding farm work with calm practicality, and that same attitude appears to have carried over into how she has spoken about her recovery.

Her update comes just weeks before Clarkson’s Farm returns to Prime Video for its fifth series. The new season is expected to arrive next month, with filming having wrapped in September 2025. The programme has become one of Prime Video’s most successful factual entertainment hits, following Clarkson’s attempts to run Diddly Squat Farm in Chadlington, Oxfordshire, alongside a growing cast of farming figures who have become stars in their own right.

Although Cowan’s role in the show was brief, she remains one of the most talked-about newer faces linked to the series. Her stint on the farm gave viewers a different dynamic during Kaleb Cooper’s absence and helped broaden the show’s appeal beyond its familiar line-up. For many fans, that made her injury update all the more striking, offering a reminder that the people seen on screen are dealing with the same very real risks and setbacks that come with agricultural work every day.

With Clarkson’s Farm preparing to return and interest in the series still high, Cowan’s latest comments have once again placed her in the spotlight, this time for a story far removed from the humour and chaos that usually define the show. Instead, it is a more sobering reminder of the physical toll that farm life can take, even when the cameras are not rolling.
