Massive Civil War Re-Enactment Set for Cotswolds Near Clarkson’s Farm This Summer

More than 2,000 participants are set to take part in a major historical re-enactment event in the Cotswolds this summer, just a short distance from Jeremy Clarkson’s Diddly Squat Farm, drawing attention from both history enthusiasts and local residents.
The large-scale event will be staged over the August Bank Holiday weekend at The Great Tew Estate, near Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire. Organised by the well-known re-enactment group The Sealed Knot, the gathering will recreate a significant battle from the English Civil War under the title “A Battle for the Cotswolds.”
Scheduled for Sunday, August 30 and Monday, August 31, the event will bring together more than 2,000 reenactors dressed as Parliamentarian and Royalist soldiers, transforming the estate into a full-scale battlefield. Organisers say the experience will include authentic-style cannon fire, cavalry charges, and coordinated infantry movements designed to reflect the intensity of 17th-century warfare.
Visitors attending the event will not only witness the main battle reenactments but will also have access to a living history encampment spread across the grounds. Throughout the day, guests can explore displays, interact with participants in historical costume, and take part in educational activities designed to showcase life during the English Civil War period.
One of the key highlights will be the Grand Battle Finale, where hundreds of reenactors will engage in a staged confrontation featuring infantry, artillery units, and mounted cavalry. The scenario will depict a strategic attempt by the Parliamentarian forces to seize control of a Royalist stronghold, offering a dramatic conclusion to the weekend’s programming.
The event will run daily from 11am to 5pm, with ticket prices set at £20 for families, £10 for individual adult entry, and £5 for concessions. Organisers have confirmed that children under five, as well as carers, will be admitted free of charge. Tickets can be purchased in advance via The Sealed Knot’s official website or at the entrance on the day of the event.
In addition to the historical displays, visitors will also have access to on-site refreshments, including a coffee barista service, a tea station, and a beer tent, ensuring a full-day experience for attendees exploring the estate.
The Great Tew area itself holds historical significance, having been the site of activity during the English Civil War era. Nearby locations such as Edgehill, Cropredy Bridge, and Stow-on-the-Wold were all associated with key battles that shaped the conflict between Royalist and Parliamentarian forces.
Long before the outbreak of war, the estate was also home to Lucius Cary, Viscount Falkland, who hosted the influential “Great Tew Circle” — a group of writers and thinkers known for their philosophical discussions and criticism of authoritarian rule and religious extremism, ideas that would later resonate with the broader political tensions of the period.
Set against this rich historical backdrop, the upcoming re-enactment is expected to draw significant public interest, blending education, entertainment, and living history just a few miles away from one of Britain’s most famous modern farms.
