Where Is The Cast Of ‘Moonshiners’ Today?

In the misty hollows of the Appalachian Mountains, where tradition runs deep and secrecy is part of survival, Moonshiners has carved out a niche as one of Discovery Channel’s most popular reality shows. First airing in December 2011, the docu-drama series—produced by Magilla Entertainment—chronicles the lives of locals who continue the age-old art of illegal moonshine distillation, all while evading the watchful eyes of law enforcement.

Filmed in remote areas of Virginia, Kentucky, North and South Carolina, and Tennessee, Moonshiners presents a blend of gritty documentary-style storytelling and dramatized reality. The show’s authenticity has often been questioned, especially after Virginia state officials demanded that producers include a disclaimer clarifying the show’s fictional elements. That never happened. Magilla insists the show is a true-to-life depiction of modern-day moonshining, and Discovery has stuck by its narrative.

The show’s rugged charm and outlaw appeal have made it a staple for over a decade, reaching 10 seasons by 2020 and spawning multiple spin-offs—including Moonshiners: Master Distiller. Characters like Steven Ray Tickle, Jeff and Lance Waldroop, Jim Tom Hendrick, and Chico and Sondra became fan favorites for their skill, storytelling, and rebellious spirit.

But real life has taken its toll. Lance Waldroop tragically passed away in 2021 at age 30, one of several personal losses for the Waldroop family. Tickle, once a beloved mainstay, served jail time—but never for moonshining—and now runs a legal operation after obtaining a distilling permit. Others, like Jim Tom, retired gracefully, partnering with Sugarlands Distillery to sell moonshine legally.

Despite the legal gray areas and the controversies, Moonshiners remains one of Discovery’s most enduring hits. It stands as both a tribute to Appalachian culture and a window into a way of life that refuses to fade into history.
