Tyler Mahoney’s Golden Find: Legendary Canowna Nuggets Hit the Auction Block!
Gold from Ghost Towns: Rare Canana Nuggets Headed for Auction
In the heart of the historic Cowgully Goldfields lies the forgotten region of Canana—once a bustling hub of gold rush fever, now a ghost town echoing with memories of trains that ran every hour and streets once lined with miners and merchants. All that remains today are crumbling ruins, a few weather-worn signs, and the legendary Mani Diner still standing against time.
But Canana’s legacy isn’t buried yet.
Two stunning gold nuggets, unearthed from the same wash layer in 2020 by a father-son duo, are about to make headlines once again. Found within meters of each other—one by the son, the other by his father—these nuggets are classic examples of Canana gold: rich in luster, natural purity, and unmistakable character. “Anyone familiar with Canana gold can spot it from a mile away,” says the prospector.
The nuggets were originally sold to a private collector, who held onto them for years. Now, in a twist of fate, they’ve been bought back—and will go up for auction this September through Richmond Auctions.
“Canana gold is beautiful,” the prospector adds. “It comes out of the ground already stunning—no acid treatment needed. There really is such a thing as pretty gold and ugly gold. And this? This is pretty gold.”
While these larger specimens are destined for the auction block, medium-sized nuggets are still available through the prospector’s website—though they don’t last long. “Our nuggets sell out so quickly,” he admits. “I’m tempted to keep the one I found.”
For gold lovers, collectors, and history buffs alike, this isn’t just a chance to own rare natural gold—it’s a chance to hold a piece of a long-lost town’s golden legacy.
