Prospecting in Australia | Tyler Mahoey’s Mystery Story about Lasseter’s Reef

Gold prospector and TV personality Tyler Mahoney has stunned fans with a chilling story from her past involving a mysterious vial of gold — and a long-forgotten corpse hidden in the Australian Outback.

In a candid “get ready with me” video posted online, Mahoney — known for her appearances on Gold Rush: Parker’s Trail and Aussie Gold Hunters — shared a real-life tale that began years ago at her family’s gold shop in Cari, Western Australia.

“We used to buy and sell gold from local prospectors,” Mahoney explained. “One day, this man — let’s call him Gary — walks in holding a little vial full of gold, absolutely buzzing.”

Gary, she said, was not a seasoned prospector but an Outback tour guide who had stumbled across the gold by accident. He proudly showed off the vial to Tyler’s parents, who ran the shop at the time.

“They were like, ‘Don’t sell it, that’s a cool story — you should keep it!’” she recalled.

But things quickly took a strange turn when Gary mentioned where he had found the gold — an area with no known history of gold deposits. In gold country, Mahoney noted, it’s considered extremely rude to ask where someone found their gold. But in this case, Gary volunteered the information.

“My parents told him, ‘That’s not a goldfield. There shouldn’t be any gold there,’” Mahoney said. “So they encouraged him to go back out and dig around. Maybe he’d stumbled on something big.”

Two weeks later, Gary returned to the shop — but he was pale, shaken, and barely able to speak.

“He looked like a ghost,” Mahoney said. “He sat down and told my parents he went back, and while exploring, he found an old shoe, some tattered clothes… and then a little cave covered in branches. Inside it, there was a dead body.”

According to Mahoney, the remains appeared to be very old — possibly 50 or 60 years — and were located disturbingly close to where the vial of gold had been found.

When told he needed to contact the authorities, Gary refused.

“He said, ‘I don’t want anything to do with this. You’re the only people I’ve told,’” Mahoney said. “Then he walked out of the store. We never saw him again.”

With no full name or contact number, Mahoney’s family had no way to follow up — and the mystery was left unsolved.

To this day, Tyler wonders what really happened. “Was it an old prospector who struck gold and was murdered?” she asked. “Or did he just get lost, run out of water, and die alone in the bush? We’ll probably never know.”

She added that this isn’t the only time she’s heard such tales. “Finding a body out in the goldfields is more common than you’d think. I’ve got a few more stories if people want to hear them.”

One thing’s for sure — the Outback still holds more secrets than gold.
