STORMS AT SEA AND AT HEART: SIG HANSEN’S UNBREAKABLE WILL
For more than two decades, Deadliest Catch fans have watched Captain Sig Hansen stare down the brutal Bering Sea with the grit and stubbornness of a Norwegian fisherman born into the waves. But some storms can’t be seen on a radar.
In March 2016, viewers held their breath as cameras captured Hansen clutching his chest in agony aboard the F/V Northwestern. The pain hit like a knife behind his chest plate. True to his reputation, he brushed it off and kept fishing—until minutes later, he collapsed.
A frantic medevac flight whisked him from the deck to a hospital in Anchorage, where doctors discovered a life-threatening clot blocking an artery. Fast-acting blood thinners saved him, but the sea wasn’t done teaching lessons.
Two years later, in October 2018, Hansen suffered a second heart attack—this time off camera. An allergic reaction to antibiotics for a sinus infection triggered the scare. Nurses later told him he was less than ten minutes from death when he arrived. An EpiPen and emergency care saved him once again.
Hansen says the close call forced him to drop his longtime smoking habit, admitting he felt ashamed for gambling with his life a second time. “No more cigarettes,” he promised himself—and stuck to it the very next day.
But even near-death scares haven’t pried the wheel from Hansen’s grip. Fans remember the shockwaves in 2010 when rumors swirled that he might walk away during Season 7. Fellow captains Jonathan and Andy Hillstrand were battling Discovery in court over an unfinished spin-off series, and Hansen stood with them in solidarity. For a tense moment, it seemed the fleet might lose three of its biggest stars. Within weeks, a deal was struck—and Hansen returned to prove that crab fishing is built on loyalty as much as steel.
When he’s not hauling pots, Hansen’s private life has weathered its own squalls. His first marriage to Lisa Extramm ended before the birth of their daughter, Melissa, who later filed civil abuse allegations that Hansen denies. No criminal charges were filed, and the case’s status remains undisclosed.
Today, Hansen’s anchor is his wife of over twenty years, June Hansen. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2019, news the couple keeps private. Hansen has often thanked fans for their prayers, crediting June’s strength for keeping him steady. Together, they have two adopted daughters Mandy, now a vital part of the Northwestern crew, and Nenah.
So, will the legendary skipper return for Season 21? Discovery has yet to announce its official cast lineup, but sightings of the Northwestern and Hansen’s own social media posts suggest the answer is yes.
Two heart attacks, lawsuits, family trials—none have pried Sig Hansen from the wheelhouse yet. As long as king crabs crawl beneath the Arctic ice, it seems the Bering Sea’s toughest captain won’t be far behind, reminding fans everywhere that hard seas test a man, but grit and family keep him afloat.
