What happened to Jeff and Lance on “Moonshiners”?

For nearly a decade, Moonshiners captivated audiences across the country with its raw, rebellious look into the world of illegal alcohol production. But no duo left a more lasting impression on fans than Jeff and Lance Waldroop—a father-son team whose close bond and ambitious stills made them fan favorites.

So when the pair vanished without explanation before Moonshiners’ eighth season, speculation ran wild. Rumors swirled. Arrests? Addiction? Family tragedy? As Discovery Channel remained silent, fans were left in the dark.

Now, years later, the truth has finally come to light.

A Legacy Distilled in the Hills

Jeff Waldroop, born September 6, 1964, in Robbinsville, NC, was a seventh-generation moonshiner. He learned the craft from his parents, William Philip Waldrop and Lakita Joy Hooper, and passed it down to his only son, Lance. The pair debuted in Moonshiners Season 2, in 2012, and quickly rose to prominence for their unconventional methods and heartfelt dynamic.

While Jeff brought decades of experience, Lance brought passion, curiosity, and a relentless drive to innovate. By Season 3, Jeff had named Lance a full business partner.

The duo’s unique marketing efforts—some questionable, like pricing moonshine at three times the market rate—only added to their charm.

Sudden Exit, Silent Network

Fans first noticed their absence in Season 8. By Season 9, concern turned to confusion. Discovery Channel gave no explanation, and even the show’s producers declined to comment.

Theories exploded online: Had they been arrested? Was there a falling out with the crew? Were health issues to blame?

It would take years—and tragedy—for the truth to surface.

Family Over Fame

The Waldroops quietly stepped away when Jeff’s wife, Lynn, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Lance volunteered to become her full-time caregiver, while Jeff returned to work as a heavy machine operator and logger to support the family.

Their exit from Moonshiners was not scandalous—it was an act of devotion.

But while they stepped away from the cameras, life behind the scenes turned darker.

A Tragic Loss

On March 1, 2021, the Waldroop family’s world was shattered when Lance was found dead in his bed at the age of 30. His mother discovered him, just four hours after they last spoke.

No foul play was suspected. But no cause of death was officially released.

According to a GoFundMe campaign launched by family friends, Lance suffered from survivor’s guilt. His two siblings, Lindsay and Lamar, both died young from cystic fibrosis. Lance struggled for years with drug addiction but had entered rehab and returned to working alongside his father.

His return to Moonshiners never happened.

Remembering Lance

Discovery Channel paid tribute to Lance online, but gave no further comment. Fans, learning the truth at last, flooded social media with condolences.

The GoFundMe goal of $15,000 for funeral expenses was met quickly, thanks to over 350 generous donors.

What Remains

The Moonshiners series continues—now entering its 10th season with over 25 distillers featured since its debut in 2011. Yet for many, the heart of the show left when Jeff and Lance did.

Their story is no longer just about illegal liquor. It’s about family. Sacrifice. Grief. And love.

Their still may be quiet now, but their legacy echoes in the hills they once called home.
