Is Wild Bill Wichrowski sick? Why he’s missing from new ‘Deadliest Catch’ episodes

For nearly a decade, Captain “Wild Bill” Wichrowski has been a familiar face and a fan favorite on Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch, captivating viewers with his no-nonsense leadership style, dry wit, and decades of experience navigating the dangerous waters of the Bering Sea. Since joining the show in 2015, the grizzled veteran has helmed the Summer Bay with determination, grit, and a deep commitment to the crabbing life. But when Season 21 premiered on Friday, August 1, many fans were quick to notice something missing — Wild Bill himself.

Wichrowski was noticeably absent from the premiere episode of the new season, raising questions about whether he’ll appear at all this year. While Discovery has yet to confirm his official status for Season 21, all signs point to the possibility that the legendary captain is taking a much-needed step back to focus on his health after a brave and very public battle with prostate cancer.

Wild Bill’s journey through cancer treatment was courageously documented during Season 20 of the series, which aired in 2024. It was a deeply emotional storyline, marked by moments of resilience, vulnerability, and quiet strength. In one particularly raw scene, Bill received a phone call from his doctor while he was still on the job — hauling crab pots in the icy, punishing waters off the Alaskan coast. The news he received was serious: his surgery to treat the cancer had been moved up, and he would have to leave the boat early, ending his season prematurely.

The decision to step away wasn’t an easy one for a man who’s built his life around the sea. But the diagnosis was clear — the cancer was aggressive and needed immediate attention. Yet even then, Bill’s instinct was not to retreat, but to push forward.

“When I heard it, one of the things I thought was, ‘You know what? I’m not going to stop [fishing].’ I’m going to keep going until I actually can’t,” he shared in a confessional moment during the show. “How many people get diagnosed with this and they just shut down and crawl into a shell? And it just makes it worse.”

Instead of hiding from the reality of his diagnosis, Wild Bill chose to confront it with the same courage he’s always brought to the wheelhouse — showing viewers that even in the face of life-altering illness, it’s possible to keep going, to keep living, and to keep working.

Throughout the season, Bill made it clear that his choice to continue fishing wasn’t just about the job — it was about setting an example. “I want people to know that you can keep your life moving, even when you’re hit with something like this. You don’t have to shut down. You don’t have to give up.”

In February 2025, Wild Bill gave fans a long-awaited update via his official Facebook page — and it came with a mix of relief and honesty. He revealed that his latest tests showed promising results, writing, “I seem to be cancer free now.” He explained that after undergoing radioactive seed therapy and hormone treatment, his “numbers are great,” but also opened up about the side effects of the treatment process.

“Not complaining, purely for information,” he wrote candidly. “The hormone thing is necessary but for me not without issues. Testosterone drops to near zero by design. You can google results of that. I have always felt 10–15 years younger than my age with the job I have and being around crew half my age. Feels like the clock has caught up. Maybe a small price to pay. Thanks for concern and best wishes. If you have symptoms, get checked.”

The message struck a chord with fans, not only for its hopeful tone but for its unfiltered honesty. Bill’s transparency about his health struggles and recovery added another layer to his legacy — not just as a fearless captain, but as a man willing to show his humanity in a world that often demands toughness above all else.

While Season 21 may be moving forward without Wild Bill — at least for now — it’s clear that his presence is still felt in the hearts of fans and fellow fishermen alike. And even as he continues to heal, the captain isn’t slowing down when it comes to life off the boat. Earlier this month, he shared photos from a fan meet-and-greet aboard an Alaskan cruise, smiling and shaking hands with those who’ve followed his journey from the deck of the Summer Bay to the very real battle for his health.

It’s unknown whether he’ll return to the Bering Sea in future seasons, but for now, Wild Bill Wichrowski seems to be charting a different course — one focused on recovery, reflection, and perhaps a little well-earned rest.

Deadliest Catch continues to air Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on the Discovery Channel.
