Clarkson’s Farm star Harriet Cowan says ‘it’s hard’ as she opens up about personal life
Harriet Cowan became a hit with fans when she appeared on series four of Clarkson’s Farm at Diddly Squat alongside former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson
Clarkson’s Farm favourite Harriet Cowan has revealed which aspect of agricultural life she finds “quite difficult”. Viewers of the Amazon Prime Video programme watched Harriet working for Jeremy Clarkson during the fourth series.
The former full-time nurse stepped in as Jeremy’s agricultural assistant whilst Kaleb Cooper was travelling across the country with his solo performance, The World According to Kaleb. Following her stint at Diddly Squat Farm, the 24-year-old has gained thousands of social media followers.
She frequently offers insights into daily life on her family’s Derbyshire farm, reports Gloucestershire Live. This exposure has encouraged Harriet to abandon her nursing career and commit to farming completely.
However, there remains one element of agricultural work that Harriet acknowledges presents challenges. During a recent YouTube upload, she reveals that managing professional duties alongside personal relationships proves challenging due to farming’s unpredictable nature.
In the YouTube clip, Harriet explained: “To balance working and social is quite difficult because you never know what your day-to-day is going to look like. Even if we get all of our jobs done and the next door neighbour rings up and says, ‘Oh your sheep are out,’ or ‘Oh your cows are out,’ or something’s not very well or what not, you then have to pop everything down and go to it.”
Nevertheless, Harriet emphasises ensuring she doesn’t “overdo” herself by remaining on the farm excessively late. She worries that numerous farmers frequently discover themselves unable to cease working, regardless of how late the hour becomes.
The TV star continued: “It’s quite difficult but I’d say setting yourself tasks for the day of what you want to get done that day on the farm and once you’ve got them done, not pushing yourself.
“If we finish at 8pm on the farm that’s quite a good win. So [I’m] not pushing myself because I’ll overdo myself. A lot of farmers don’t know when to stop because they’re so used to farming all the time.”
Last month Harriet revealed that she was stepping back from her nursing career to concentrate on farming, including managing her Harriet on the Farm YouTube channel. However, she disclosed she intended to continue working occasional shifts for the NHS.
Harriet said: “The cat’s somewhat out of the bag. It’s true, I am no longer nursing because it appears I got the bug.
“You definitely know what the bug is right, yeah I got the farming bug. And I’ve always had it, but before, you know, I didn’t really have any other income.”
She continued: “I’m going to do bank shifts and I’m still going to be working in the NHS, but yeah, just not daily”.
In a previous TikTok video, Harriet called the recognition she’d received “insane,” saying she couldn’t “thank people enough” for wanting to “get involved” in her journey.
She aims to encourage other women to think about entering the farming sector, which is frequently and mistakenly viewed as a male-dominated field.
