Clarkson’s Farm star says ‘it’s quite difficult’ as she opens up about personal life struggle

Harriet Cowan became a hit with fans when she appeared on series four of Clarkson’s Farm at Diddly Squat alongside former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson

Clarkson’s Farm star Harriet Cowan has opened up about a part of farming that she finds “quite difficult”. Fans of the Amazon Prime Video series saw Harriet working for Jeremy Clarkson in series four.

The former full-time nurse was working as Jeremy’s farmhand while Kaleb Cooper was touring the nation with his one-man-show, The World According to Kaleb. Since her spell at Diddly Squat Farm, 24-year-old Harriet has amassed thousands of followers on social media.

She regularly shares a glimpse into life on her family farm in Derbyshire. It has prompted Harriet to quit her career as a nurse and pursue agriculture full-time.

There is however one part of farming that Harriet concedes she struggles with. In a recent YouTube video, she admits juggling your work and social life can be tough due to the unpredictability of farming.

In a YouTube video, Harriet said: “To balance working and social is quite difficult because you never know what your day-to-day is going to look like. Even if we get all of our jobs done and the next door neighbour rings up and says, ‘Oh your sheep are out,’ or ‘Oh your cows are out,’ or something’s not very well or what not, you then have to pop everything down and go to it.”

Harriet however says she likes to make sure she doesn’t “overdo” herself by staying on the farm too late. She fears many farmers often find themselves feeling unable to stop working, however late it gets.

The TV star added: “It’s quite difficult but I’d say setting yourself tasks for the day of what you want to get done that day on the farm and once you’ve got them done, not pushing yourself.

“If we finish at 8pm on the farm that’s quite a good win. So [I’m] not pushing myself because I’ll overdo myself. A lot of farmers don’t know when to stop because they’re so used to farming all the time.”

Last month Harriet announced that she was pivoting away from her work as a nurse to focus on farming, including running her Harriet on the Farm YouTube channel. Although she did reveal she planned to work some shifts for the NHS.

Harriet explained: “The cat’s somewhat out of the bag. It’s true, I am no longer nursing because it appears I got the bug.

“You definitely know what the bug is right, yeah I got the farming bug. And I’ve always had it, but before, you know, I didn’t really have any other income.”

She added: “I’m going to do bank shifts and I’m still going to be working in the NHS, but yeah, just not daily”.

In an earlier TikTok clip, Harriet described the fame she’d gained as “insane,” explaining she couldn’t “thank people enough” for wanting to “get involved” in her journey.

She hopes to inspire other women to consider joining the agricultural industry, which is often wrongly stereotyped as a masculine profession.
