Clarkson’s Long-Time Producer Shares Candid Insight Into His True Personality

Jeremy Clarkson’s closest friend and long-time creative partner has lifted the curtain on what the outspoken presenter is really like when the cameras stop rolling.

Clarkson, best known for fronting the BBC’s Top Gear, Amazon’s The Grand Tour, and the hugely successful Clarkson’s Farm, has built a public image around blunt humour, controversy, and larger-than-life opinions. But according to executive producer Andy Wilman — the man who has worked beside him for more than twenty years — there is a far more nuanced figure behind that familiar television persona.

Wilman, now 63, has not only collaborated with Clarkson professionally for decades but has also known him personally since their school days in Derbyshire, where they were classmates alongside future Formula 1 design legend Adrian Newey. The pair’s relationship has lasted a lifetime, with Wilman serving as best man at Clarkson’s weddings and becoming godfather to his son, Finlo. Clarkson, in turn, is godfather to Wilman’s daughter, Martha.

Speaking at Dunsfold Airfield — the iconic Top Gear test track that became a second home for the pair during their years reinventing the motoring show — Wilman reflected on the man behind the headlines. As reported by the Express, he explained that Clarkson’s reputation as a provocateur only tells part of the story.

“He might be King of Outspoken Opinions,” Wilman said, “but behind that, he’s a worker bee. Tell him to deliver something by a certain time, and he’ll just get on with it.”

Wilman’s comments paint a picture of someone far more disciplined and industrious than his brash TV image suggests. For decades, the two have worked side by side crafting the distinctive style of Top Gear — a mix of cinematic motoring films, stunts, dry humour, and chemistry that made the show a global phenomenon. Their partnership continued in 2015 when Clarkson, along with co-hosts Richard Hammond and James May, left the BBC and moved to Prime Video to create The Grand Tour, with Wilman once again shaping the series behind the scenes.

Through all of these transitions, their friendship has remained constant — a rare, enduring bond in the world of television. And while millions know Clarkson as the loud, opinionated frontman of some of the world’s biggest motoring shows, Wilman’s insight reveals that the man steering the ship is also organised, determined, and deeply committed to his work.
