Former Top Gear presenter Steve Barry has ignited headlines after revealing long-simmering tensions with Jeremy Clarkson, the man who later catapulted the motoring show into global fame.
Speaking to Alarabia News, Barry shared candid recollections of his brief time working alongside Clarkson at the BBC. The two reportedly clashed from the very beginning, with Barry recalling Clarkson’s late arrival to their first joint shoot — a full two hours behind schedule.
“I was there early, hoping to make a solid first impression,” Barry said. “But Clarkson strolled in late, like he owned the place. The crew was fuming.”
That encounter set the tone for a relationship Barry described as “strained from the start.” He went on to brand Clarkson as a “massive showoff and egotist,” though he acknowledged that the same bold personality is what made Clarkson a standout figure on TV.
“He’s the kind of person who makes you roll your eyes off-camera and keeps viewers glued to the screen on-camera,” Barry admitted.
Despite the friction, Barry recognizes Clarkson’s undeniable charisma. “Whether you love him or hate him, he knows how to entertain,” he said.
Barry also recounted an awkward run-in with Clarkson years after their time at Top Gear, quoting Clarkson as saying, “People know we don’t like each other. I’ll buy you a pint and we’ll pretend we do.”
From Fast Cars to Farm Life
Since departing from Top Gear, Clarkson has reinvented himself as the face of Clarkson’s Farm, a widely praised Amazon series documenting his misadventures in agriculture on his Oxfordshire property. In addition to filming, Clarkson has recently opened a pub, The Farmer’s Dog, earning praise for his surprisingly down-to-earth demeanor from those now working with him.
Though controversial at times, Clarkson remains a central figure in British entertainment, with a public image that continues to spark debate.
