James May takes swipe at Clarkson and Hammond at Oxford show

James May made the crowd howl at his live show in Oxford by making digs at both Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond.

The three friends presented BBC’s Top Gear and then The Grand Tour on Prime Video for over 20 years.

This culminated with one final special, The Grand Tour: One For The Road, which was released last year and saw the trio travel across Zimbabwe and Botswana.

Having now gone their separate ways, each has not been short of solo projects, with James May currently on a solo tour around UK theatres.

Last night, his Explorers: The Age of Discovery tour brought him to Oxford’s New Theatre on George Street for a one-night-only event.

The 62-year-old greeted the crowd and spent the evening telling tales of great explorers over the years, with mentions of the Vikings, astronauts and more.

Alongside the information jokes were thrown in, which amused the Oxford crowd with a couple of jabs pointed in the direction of his former co-stars.

Mr Clarkson, who owns both a farm and a pub in Oxfordshire, was the subject of the first, as Mr May went back in time in his storytelling to a point where farming did not exist.

After stating that point, he added: “And we would have been saved from a long, drawn-out series.”

Making the implied reference to Clarkson’s Farm on Prime Video, set at Diddly Squat Farm in Chadlington, the crowd erupted with laughter.

He followed up with “I was talking about Countryfile”, which garnered even more laughs.

Mr May later spoke about the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, who was obsessed with finding the elixir of life to achieve immortality.

Stating that no such thing exists, he then added that an anti-grey hair formula would have to suffice these days before projecting a photograph of Mr Hammond on the big screen, again to the audience’s amusement.
