Jeremy Clarkson determined to turn his life around after major heart surgery
Jeremy Clarkson has candidly revealed the dramatic lifestyle changes he has embraced following major heart surgery last year, admitting he is now “determined not to die.”
The outspoken broadcaster and Clarkson’s Farm star, 64, underwent emergency surgery in October 2024 after doctors discovered a serious blockage in his arteries. Surgeons inserted two stents into his heart, a procedure which Clarkson has now described as a life-saving intervention that has forced him to rethink how he approaches his health.
Motivated by Family
Writing in The Sunday Times, Clarkson said his biggest motivation has come from becoming a grandfather. The former Top Gear host now has two grandchildren via his eldest daughter, Emily, with the youngest arriving just before Christmas. Clarkson admitted that the joy of spending time with them had given him a new sense of purpose.
“I have decided that it is so wonderful that I want it to go on for as long as is humanly possible,” he explained. “Which means I must do everything in my power to not die.”
A History of Health Struggles
Clarkson has never shied away from describing his lifestyle as indulgent. Over the years, he has admitted to drinking heavily, smoking, and avoiding structured exercise. He confessed that earlier attempts to get active had largely failed, joking that “Michelangelo’s David burns more calories than I do when I’m out and about.”
This lack of fitness began to concern him deeply once he realised it could limit the years he has left to enjoy with his grandchildren. “When you want to see your grandchildren grow up, that’s not good enough,” he wrote.
New Commitment to Fitness
Since undergoing surgery, Clarkson has embarked on a new chapter of self-care. In particular, he has started taking Pilates lessons — a move he never imagined he would make.
“What we’ve learnt so far is that my pelvis is so cockeyed I look like a broken shotgun, my legs are very ‘heavy’ and that my fat can be made to hurt,” he said, poking fun at his own struggles with the exercises. Despite the discomfort, he has embraced the challenge, admitting that for the first time in his life he cannot simply rely on good fortune to keep him alive.
“I’ve always relied on luck to keep me alive. But I’m in sniper’s alley right now and I have to work at dodging the bullets,” Clarkson acknowledged.
Clarkson’s Farm Future
While his health scare has forced him to slow down in certain aspects of life, Clarkson has not stepped back from television. His hit series Clarkson’s Farm, which follows his often-chaotic attempts to run a 1,000-acre farm in the Cotswolds, remains one of Prime Video’s most popular shows.
Three seasons have already aired, with a fourth due for release soon. Clarkson recently confirmed that filming had wrapped on season five, which will air after the upcoming installment. In a typically dramatic announcement posted on Instagram, he used glowing lights in the night sky to tease fans.
“Over the years bright lights in the sky have been used to make many important announcements, the birth of the baby Jesus for example,” Clarkson quipped. “But tonight they’re being used to make an announcement that’s even bigger than that. Season 5 of Clarkson’s Farm is coming.”
Looking Ahead
Now balancing his recovery, his new commitment to Pilates, and his role as both grandfather and farmer, Clarkson appears more determined than ever to extend his time with his family while still entertaining audiences. Clarkson’s Farm continues to stream globally on Prime Video, offering fans a window into his farming misadventures, and with at least two more seasons confirmed, viewers will see even more of Clarkson’s journey both on and off the land.
