Jeremy Clarkson Slams “Ridiculous” New Rule Banning Popular Dog Breeds
Jeremy Clarkson, the outspoken former Top Gear and The Grand Tour host, has voiced his strong disapproval of a new rule that could ban ownership of several popular dog breeds. The controversial new rule, which has been set in motion by a newly formed committee, is part of an effort to limit the ownership of certain dog breeds deemed unsuitable or problematic by the committee’s standards.
Clarkson, who has made a name for himself in the media for his bold and often divisive opinions, is based in Oxfordshire, where he owns both a picturesque farm and a recently renovated pub. His farm, Diddly Squat Farm, located in Chadlington, has been his pride and joy since 2008, while in recent years, Clarkson has expanded his rural empire by purchasing The Windmill pub in Asthall, near Burford. After a thorough renovation, the pub was rebranded as The Farmer’s Dog in August 2024, a fitting tribute to Clarkson’s beloved dogs and his deep love for animals. The name also serves as a nod to the popular canine companions that have featured in his Prime Video series, Clarkson’s Farm.
Known for his affection towards animals, Clarkson is a proud owner of several Fox Red Labradors, who have often appeared in his documentaries. These lovable dogs are frequently seen on the farm, where Clarkson’s interactions with them highlight his love for pets and rural life.
However, Clarkson’s frustration has grown over a new proposal that could drastically alter how people in the UK choose and own dogs. The Daily Star has reported that a newly-formed committee is planning to enforce restrictions that would ban over 60 dog breeds, which the committee believes should no longer be allowed due to perceived temperament or physical traits. Among the breeds facing potential bans are popular family dogs like Basset Hounds, St Bernards, Pugs, and even the King Charles Spaniel. These breeds, known for their friendly personalities and distinctive features, could be outlawed under the new regulations.
Clarkson, never one to shy away from controversy, has described the proposed rule as “too ridiculous for words.” In comments relayed by the Daily Star, Clarkson expressed his outrage at the idea of government intervention dictating which dog breeds people are allowed to own, saying: “Under new proposals, you will not be permitted to choose what dog you want, based on its face or its ears or its temperament.” He went on to voice his distaste for what he sees as unnecessary restrictions on people’s choices: “I’d hate to live in a world where there were none of those. Whereas I’d quite like to live in a world where there are no political committees banning the Scotty dog for being too dense.”
Clarkson continued to mock the absurdity of the situation, suggesting that under the new law, beloved breeds with unique features could be banned simply for their physical traits. “Basset hounds and St Bernards would be banished. So would the pug. And your King Charles Spaniel can stop grinning because our glorious leaders say that bulging eyes would be against the law, too.”
For Clarkson, the idea of government restricting the freedom to own certain breeds based on arbitrary traits like “bulging eyes” or temperament is a step too far. His comments reflect growing concerns among pet owners and animal lovers who feel that such proposals unfairly target certain breeds without any solid evidence to back up their claims.
As the debate continues to spark outrage, Clarkson’s impassioned criticism underscores a wider issue regarding the balance between regulation and personal freedoms, especially when it comes to the bond between people and their pets. Whether or not these new rules will come into effect remains to be seen, but for now, Clarkson’s outcry is a reflection of the ongoing pushback against what he sees as an overreach by political authorities into personal choices.
As for Clarkson himself, it’s clear that his love for his dogs—and for the simple joy of rural life—remains unwavering. His strong stance on this issue is just one example of his willingness to speak out on matters he feels passionate about, regardless of the controversy that may follow.
