Jeremy Clarkson wins planning battle over his pub
Jeremy Clarkson, star of Clarkson’s Farm, has emerged victorious in a long-running planning battle concerning his popular pub, The Farmer’s Dog, in Burford, Oxfordshire. The television presenter and farmer had been waiting for over a year for a decision on whether he would be permitted to improve the pub’s parking facilities. This month, the West Oxfordshire District Council finally granted Clarkson permission to lay hard surfacing in both car parks, which had been the subject of extensive deliberation.
The planning approval comes after a lengthy wait, during which Clarkson’s pub, located in the picturesque village of Asthall, faced scrutiny over its parking arrangements. According to the Oxford Mail, the local council’s planning officer, Kelly Murray, acknowledged that the pub’s success had led to a significant increase in traffic, which had caused congestion along the A40 road and within the village itself. The decision was made after extensive review and the recognition that The Farmer’s Dog had attracted an unusually high number of visitors for a rural establishment.
Despite these challenges, the planning officer emphasized that due to the pub’s lawful operation as a restaurant and public house, the local authority had limited power to prevent the impacts of the heightened public interest. However, it was clear to Murray and the team that for the safety and convenience of visitors, off-road parking was essential to mitigate the risk of traffic obstruction, congestion, and damage to the surrounding environment.
Murray specifically referenced the issues faced at Clarkson’s other well-known business, Diddly Squat Farm, to underline the importance of proper parking. Diddly Squat Farm, another of Clarkson’s ventures featured in Clarkson’s Farm, has become a popular tourist spot, and the lack of adequate parking there has led to visible damage to roadside verges, creating hazardous conditions for both pedestrians and vehicles.
The West Oxfordshire District Council’s decision to approve the parking improvement was based on the understanding that the public’s demand for safe and accessible parking was crucial to avoid exacerbating the issues Clarkson’s other ventures had already faced. The decision concluded by stating that while there would be some minimal impact from the expanded parking at The Farmer’s Dog, the public benefit of granting the request far outweighed any potential harm.
Clarkson’s purchase of The Farmer’s Dog in the summer of 2024, previously known as The Windmill, marked another chapter in his ongoing farming and business adventures. The pub’s transformation and the challenges Clarkson faced in reopening it were prominently featured in the hit Amazon Prime series, Clarkson’s Farm. This approval marks a significant step in ensuring that the pub can continue to serve its customers without creating further strain on the local infrastructure.
This win for Clarkson is yet another example of his deep investment in the Cotswolds, where his various businesses, including Diddly Squat Farm and The Farmer’s Dog, continue to attract significant attention and tourism. With the planning hurdle cleared, Clarkson is now one step closer to ensuring his rural ventures can continue to thrive while minimizing their impact on the surrounding community.
