Deadliest Catch Exposed: Heartbreak and Controversy on the Bering Sea
The treacherous waters of the Bering Sea have long been the backdrop for Discovery Channel’s hit reality series Deadliest Catch. But behind the drama of crab fishing lies a series of personal tragedies, health battles, and controversies that have rocked the cast and fans alike.
Heartbreaking Losses at Sea and on Land
In the summer of 2020, the show suffered its first major blow when deckhand Mahlon Reyes, a regular aboard the Seabrooke and Cape Caution, died of a sudden heart attack at age 38. His family honored him by spreading his ashes over the Bering Sea and the Swan Range Mountains of Montana.
Later that year, tragedy struck again when Nick McGlashan, a veteran deckhand of the Summer Bay, died at 33 from a drug overdose. McGlashan had struggled with alcohol and drug addiction, but had sought treatment in 2016 and returned to the show, earning praise from Captain Bill Wichrowski as “the epitome of a true crabber.”
Other fatal incidents on the show included Todd Kochutin, struck by an 800-pound sliding crab pot aboard the Patricia Lee, and Ross Jones, a young deckhand who passed away in June 2022, leaving behind a grieving partner and young son.
Dangerous Waters Take Their Toll
Accidents are an ever-present threat in commercial fishing. In April 2022, Francis Katungin was pinned between crab pots during a rogue wave incident on the Patricia Lee, suffering hip and pelvis injuries that required a Coast Guard helicopter evacuation. Crew member Devon Davis later suffered a head injury, highlighting the relentless hazards faced by the cast.
Nick Mavar, a longtime deckhand on the F/V Northwestern, survived multiple on-deck injuries including a broken nose and a burst appendix, which led to the discovery of a cancerous tumor. Tragically, Mavar died of a heart attack in June 2024, underscoring that even off the deck, fishermen remain vulnerable.
Financial Struggles and Career Upheavals
Captain Jake Anderson of the F/V Saga experienced financial setbacks after the 2021–2022 red king crab season cancellations and the repossession of his boat in 2023. Fortunately, former mentor Captain Sig Hansen offered Anderson a place on the F/V Northwestern, allowing him to continue working despite the loss.
Meanwhile, the storied Cornelia Marie, once captained by Phil Harris and later by his sons, saw its run end following a scandal involving Josh Harris, who pled guilty to charges stemming from an incident in 1998. Discovery Channel subsequently removed both Harris and his partner Casey McManus from the show, permanently retiring the vessel from filming.
Legal and Personal Controversies
Even long-standing captains have faced scrutiny. Sig Hansen, a central figure on Deadliest Catch, was sued by his estranged daughter in 2017 over alleged abuse dating back to her childhood. Hansen has consistently denied the accusations, calling the lawsuit “a completely frivolous shakedown,” though a civil trial was allowed to proceed.
The Harsh Reality of Life on the Bering Sea
Deadliest Catch continues to showcase the perils and pressures of one of the world’s most dangerous professions. For its cast, the risks are physical, financial, and emotional, with accidents, health crises, and personal tragedies an ever-present part of life at sea.
From sudden deaths and serious injuries to financial ruin and legal battles, the show’s behind-the-scenes realities paint a sobering picture: the drama isn’t just on camera—it’s a reflection of the high stakes and relentless dangers of commercial crab fishing.
