Deadliest Catch: Season 21 Brings Tensions, Breakdowns, and Emotional Reckonings

[Warning: Spoilers for Deadliest Catch Season 21]

The Bering Sea is no place for the faint of heart, and this week’s episode of Deadliest Catch—airing September 19, 2025—proved exactly why. With 50-knot winds and treacherous conditions, tensions ran high aboard The Wizard, where Captain Keith Colburn’s patience was tested by an inexperienced crew. Co-captain Monte Colburn described the atmosphere bluntly: “Stress factory.”

Trouble began with crew member Calvin, who quickly raised red flags. During a wheelhouse discussion, he demanded a bigger role and a money draw before even pulling his first pot. Keith refused his request for $7,500 and later learned Calvin was seeking $10,000 for bills. Adding insult to injury, his former employer barely remembered him, leaving Keith convinced he was underqualified. After previously letting go of crew member Connor in last week’s episode, Keith made the tough call to fire Calvin, offering him $2,000 and a plane ticket home.

But Calvin’s defiance didn’t end there. After reaching out to other captains for work, including Northwestern’s Sig Hansen, Keith confronted him at a bar. Calvin’s parting words—“See you later, you [expletive] maggot”—did little to soothe Keith, who just wanted his crew focused and the boat safe.

Meanwhile, aboard the Titan Explorer, Jake Anderson faced the crushing weight of a $3 million quota. As he prepped 150 pots for the bairdi grounds, engineer Felipe Miramontes discovered water leaking into a tank, threatening the engine and jeopardizing their haul. Forced to return to port, Jake confronted the mental strain of the job, admitting to wife Jenna, “I hate this job. I want to quit.” His struggle was compounded by unresolved trauma surrounding his father’s disappearance 15 years ago. With medical guidance urging him to step away, Jake wrestled with panic attacks and emotional exhaustion. However, a glimmer of hope emerged when his efforts yielded pots brimming with 80 to 86 crabs—a small but significant victory amid his dark period.

On the Time Bandit, Johnathan Hillstrand battled a contagious norovirus while his wife Heather was running a 102-degree fever. Despite crew members succumbing to the illness, Johnathan remained unaffected, crediting his daily milk intake. The team rallied to meet their four-day deadline, proving resilience is as essential as skill on the high seas.

This week’s episode highlighted the harsh realities of life in the Bering Sea: high stakes, fraught emotions, and the constant dance between danger and perseverance. Deadliest Catch airs Fridays at 8/7c on Discovery Channel.
