Deadliest Catch Season 21: Jake Anderson’s New Chapter After Losing the F/V Saga

For years, fans of Deadliest Catch have followed Jake Anderson’s turbulent journey across the icy waters of the Bering Sea. Known for his grit, resilience, and relentless drive to succeed, Anderson carved out his reputation first on the F/V Northwestern and later as captain of the F/V Saga. But as Deadliest Catch sails into its 21st season, viewers are witnessing a major turning point in Anderson’s career. Instead of steering the Saga, the boat he made famous through nearly a decade of hard-fought battles, he now commands a different vessel: the F/V Titan Explorer.

This dramatic shift didn’t come without heartbreak, controversy, and a steep learning curve for Anderson. His story in the past two seasons has been one of devastating loss, unexpected redemption, and a quest to rebuild his legacy from the ground up.

The Rise of Jake Anderson

Jake Anderson joined Deadliest Catch back in 2007 as a greenhorn on the legendary F/V Northwestern, working under the guidance of the Hansen family. Fans watched him grow from a deckhand struggling through rough seas and personal hardships into a capable leader. His rise reached its peak when he became captain of the F/V Saga during Season 11, taking over the helm of one of the fleet’s most recognizable crab boats.

For nearly nine years, Anderson ran the Saga through dangerous waters, unpredictable quotas, and intense rivalries. Under his leadership, the vessel became a cornerstone of the series. But by the time Deadliest Catch returned for its 20th season in 2024, the tide had turned.

The Loss of the F/V Saga

Anderson’s world was rocked before cameras even started rolling. He revealed that when he arrived at the dock in August, ready to prepare for the lucrative red crab season, he was met with a lock on the boat and a repossession notice.

“I found out on a Friday in August,” Anderson told TV Insider. “Everything was situated to go red crab fishing. Then September 1, things started to look dark.”

The blow came fast. “I went from having the most King Crab to catch and having a nice platform I built with my own two hands, to losing it all over a weekend.”

The situation unfolded further in Season 20’s episodes. Anderson shared that his partner, Lenny Herzog, who handled the Saga’s finances, had called him weeks before, warning that the boat might be running out of money. “King Crab’s open, and that was going to get us out of the hole, easily. But I had no idea that things were this bad.”

Why the Saga Was Lost

The collapse of Anderson’s career as captain of the Saga came down to financial mismanagement, according to his account. Anderson explained that while he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the vessel, Herzog managed the business side—and things had spiraled beyond recovery.

“I found out my partner, with all due respect with the legal things going on, we don’t know what he did. I lost my boat,” Anderson admitted.

The revelation left him blindsided, with no claim, no platform, and no control over the future of the Saga.

Picking Up the Pieces With the F/V Northwestern

After the devastating loss, Anderson faced the unthinkable: stepping away from his captain’s chair. Yet in one of the most surprising turns of his career, he returned to his roots. Sig Hansen, his former mentor and sometimes rival, welcomed him back onto the Northwestern for the King Crab season.

“For Sig specifically, not that I expected him to take me in, but we both knew we’d had a tumultuous relationship,” Anderson recalled. “Without my boat, I’m not a threat to him anymore. I can only be an asset. Honestly, if you asked him, I think he was, in a very small way, happy to have some of his team back again.”

Still, the transition wasn’t easy. After years as a captain, Anderson struggled with the humbling reality of once again being a crew member. “I really had to step down, and that was really hard for me,” he admitted. “It really settled in where I was and where I was in reality, in that I didn’t think I was going to end up sitting on the port side of the old boat I used to work on. Yet, there I was.”

A New Beginning: Captain of the Titan Explorer

By the end of Season 20, Anderson’s resilience paid off. He found his way back into the wheelhouse—this time as captain of the F/V Titan Explorer, a vessel that marks the beginning of a new chapter in his career.

Season 21 follows Anderson as he establishes himself aboard the Titan Explorer, working to rebuild trust, regain his reputation, and prove he can still compete at the highest level of the crab fishing world. With the memory of the Saga still fresh, Anderson carries both the weight of past failures and the determination to chart a brighter future.

Looking Ahead

Jake Anderson’s story has always been one of perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds. From his early struggles to his years of leadership on the Saga, and now to his reinvention on the Titan Explorer, Anderson embodies the very spirit of Deadliest Catch: survival, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of fortune in one of the most dangerous professions in the world.

Season 21 promises to capture that spirit in full force, as Anderson and the rest of the fleet navigate treacherous seas, fierce rivalries, and a future that is anything but certain.

Deadliest Catch, Season 21, airs Fridays at 8/7c on Discovery Channel.
