Sig Hansen’s Wife June: Health Update After Cancer Battle
Deadliest Catch fans have watched Captain Sig Hansen weather storm after storm — both at sea and in his personal life. The legendary fisherman has faced serious health scares himself, including a major heart attack in 2016 and what he later described as a “slight heart attack” in 2018. But his wife, June Hansen, has also endured her own frightening medical battle that left viewers deeply concerned.
What happened to June Hansen?
June’s health struggle first came to light during Season 15 of Deadliest Catch. Sig revealed to cameras that doctors had discovered something alarming.
“It sounds like my wife has a form of cancer,” Sig said at the time. “We do know that this area on her neck is cancer, we just don’t know if there’s more.”
Despite the diagnosis, June remained resilient. She even appeared by her husband’s side at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards that same year, demonstrating her strength and determination to keep moving forward.
Sig’s 2025 update on June’s condition
In August 2025, as the show prepared to launch its 21st season, Sig shared encouraging news in an interview with Parade.
“She did have potential cancer, but we got through that,” he revealed, describing June as “solvent.” Today, Sig says his wife is highly focused on maintaining her health. She works out daily, with swimming in their backyard pool being her favorite form of exercise.
“She’s tougher than she looks,” he added. “She is very supportive. But at the end of the day, I want to spend more time with her. I feel like she’s given so much to me… When I was younger, we were gone for six months, sometimes eight or ten months out of the year. It’s time to pay that back.”
The captain admitted that age and perspective have shifted his priorities: “Maybe that’s just old age, I don’t know. But I feel like I owe her so much, and I don’t know how to repay her.”
Do Sig and June have children?
Together, Sig and June Hansen are parents to two daughters, Mandy and Nina, both of whom they adopted. Mandy, in particular, has followed closely in her father’s footsteps, appearing on Deadliest Catch and helping to carry on the family’s fishing legacy. Through their daughters, Sig and June are proud grandparents of four grandchildren.
Sig also has another daughter, Melissa Eckstrom, from his first marriage to Lisa Eckstrom. Their relationship has been complicated, marked by long-standing legal disputes and accusations that Sig has firmly denied.
Looking ahead
For now, both Sig and June seem focused on health, family, and the future. While Deadliest Catch continues to showcase the brutal reality of life on the Bering Sea, Sig has made it clear that his heart is increasingly at home — with June, the partner who has stood by him through the hardest battles of his life.
Deadliest Catch, Season 21, airs Fridays at 8/7c on Discovery Channel.
