Fletchers' Family Farm

‘Absolutely Devastating’: Kelvin and Liz Fletcher Share Emotional News of Farm Loss

Kelvin and Liz Fletcher face one of their toughest moments yet on their ITV series Fletcher’s Family Farm, as the couple receive devastating news from their vet about one of their cows. The emotional scenes, set to air in the upcoming episode on Sunday, capture the reality of farming life — moments of joy instantly met with heartbreak.

The former Emmerdale star and his wife have been steadily building their family farm in Cheshire, involving their four young children in the day-to-day routines. But in the latest episode, the couple are left visibly shaken when they learn that one of their beloved cows has suffered a miscarriage.

The day begins with optimism as Kelvin and Liz prepare for pregnancy testing, a significant moment for any small farm. Before the vet even arrives, Liz admits she’s feeling the pressure. “We’ve got the cows in. We’re going to pregnancy test them,” she says, trying to steady her nerves. “It’s a little bit nerve-racking, whether it’s worked, whether he’s done his job, or whether he’s just been rolling around the field having a nice time. I’m hoping he’s been busy.”

Their first cow, Cherry, is brought forward for scanning. With Kelvin and Liz watching anxiously, the vet begins carefully checking for signs of pregnancy. After a tense few moments, he reassures them: “So I’m just scanning around both sides of a uterus… and there is a calf in there.” The relief is instantaneous.

Kelvin beams with pride while the vet confirms, “You’ve got one pregnancy there, all looking healthy. That’s a healthy calf there.” Liz turns to their children, who are huddled close, and tells them sweetly, “She is having a baby.”

The vet goes on to explain that the growing calf is around seven weeks old and already measures roughly three centimetres. Kelvin, taking in the significance of the moment, encourages his kids to look at the monitor. “Have a quick look there, guys — what a special moment to share with your kids,” he says, clearly moved.

But the family’s joy is short-lived.

When Ruby, another much-loved cow, is brought in for her scan, the vet’s demeanour shifts. Kelvin and Liz immediately sense something is wrong. The vet delivers the news gently but directly: “Okay, not quite so good news now, Kelvin, I’m afraid. Strangely, she actually seems to have a uterus infection, which most likely means she has been pregnant and has had a miscarriage.”

Liz gasps, visibly emotional. “Oh no,” she says, struggling to take in the unexpected loss. The vet explains that immediate treatment is necessary: “We’re gonna have to give her an injection to clear that out. The longer you leave it untreated, the higher the chance of them not getting in calf, basically.”

Kelvin reflects soberly on the news. “I mean, it’s disappointing. So yeah, it’s a shame. The main priority is to get it sorted and treated. So we’re gonna give her an injection now that’ll treat her.”

Despite the sadness of the moment, the vet offers a glimmer of reassurance. Ruby’s miscarriage, he explains, also confirms that she can conceive — meaning the Fletchers can try again once she recovers. Kelvin hangs on to that hope. “There is some good news. The miscarriage does prove that Ruby is fertile,” he says. “And once she’s recovered, we’ll be able to run her with a bull.”

The episode highlights the raw reality of farming — the delicate balance between life and loss — and shows just how emotionally invested Kelvin, Liz, and their children have become in their growing herd. While the heartbreak is undeniable, the family’s resilience and deep care for their animals shine through, reminding viewers of the unpredictable but deeply rewarding world of running a working farm.
