Kelvin Fletcher and wife Liz’s fears of being ‘homeless again’ following ‘devastation’ at family farm

Kelvin Fletcher and his wife Liz have opened up about another difficult chapter in their farming journey after a powerful storm tore through their property, leaving the family shaken and confronting the possibility that they could once again lose their home.

The dramatic scenes were captured in a recent episode of Fletchers’ Family Farm, where the couple surveyed the damage left behind by violent weather that swept across the countryside. The storm, part of a wider wave of extreme conditions affecting large parts of the country, brought strong winds and heavy rain that battered the land and left destruction across their Peak District farm.

Speaking in a voiceover during the episode, Kelvin explained just how severe the storm had been and how quickly the situation escalated.

“Storm season is sweeping through the whole country, causing major floods and devastation,” he said. “Our farm hasn’t escaped the impact.”

As the couple walked across their land to assess the aftermath, the scale of the damage quickly became clear. Several large trees had been uprooted by the wind, fencing had been torn apart, and debris had been scattered across the paddocks.

One fallen tree in particular left the couple visibly shaken. The massive trunk had collapsed dangerously close to their family lodge, narrowly missing the building by only a few feet.

Looking at the destruction, Liz struggled to process what had happened.

“Gosh, it’s hard to believe that the wind can blow that down, isn’t it?” she said, staring at the fallen tree.

Kelvin pointed out how close the tree had come to their home, a realization that underscored just how narrowly the family had avoided another disaster.

Reflecting on the moment, Liz admitted the near miss brought back painful memories of the challenges they had already faced in recent months.

“We would have been homeless again,” she said.

Her words carried particular weight because the Fletcher family had already endured a devastating setback not long before. Last year, a catastrophic fire forced them to leave their farm and rebuild their lives after their home was severely damaged.

The experience had already tested the family’s resilience. Now, standing beside storm-damaged fields and fallen trees, the couple found themselves once again confronting how unpredictable life on a farm can be.

Despite the damage caused by the storm, there was at least some relief. Kelvin confirmed that while fencing had been damaged and trees had fallen across parts of the land, none of the animals on the farm were injured during the violent weather.

One enormous tree had collapsed directly across fencing in the paddock, creating additional work for the family as they began the process of clearing debris and repairing boundaries to keep livestock secure.

For farmers, storms like this can create days — sometimes weeks — of recovery work. Broken fencing, damaged pasture and fallen trees all need to be dealt with quickly to ensure animals remain safe and the farm can continue operating.

Yet the storm was only one of several emotional moments captured in the episode.

The program also followed Kelvin as he prepared to say goodbye to Sonic, the very first calf born on the Fletcher family farm.

For Kelvin, the moment represented a significant milestone in the farm’s development, but it was also deeply emotional. Sonic had become a symbol of the family’s early days building their new agricultural life.

Speaking candidly about the moment, Kelvin admitted it was far more difficult than he had expected.

“The day has arrived to say goodbye to our first-ever calf, Sonic,” he said. “It’s bittersweet, really. It’s a bit of a weird one.”

Unlike other livestock decisions farmers must make, Sonic carried a special meaning because he represented the beginning of the herd and the start of their farming journey.

Kelvin acknowledged that the emotional attachment made the decision particularly challenging.

“We’ll always remember Sonic,” he said.

Even so, he recognised that such moments are part of the realities of farm life.

“They say the first is always the hardest,” he added.
