Rally Valley, Yukon – After weeks of setbacks, stress, and mechanical challenges, Rick Ness and his crew have finally struck pay dirt in what could be the richest ground of their mining careers.
The breakthrough came after a tense start-up of Monster Red, the team’s massive wash plant. Early in the day, sharp-eyed operator Ryan noticed a critical flaw: one side of the spray bars wasn’t reaching the screen deck, sending valuable gold straight into the tailings. “For the love of God, we need to fix this,” Ryan warned.
Using T-pipes and extra lines, the crew linked the spray bars together to balance pressure. The fix worked—Monster Red roared to life, washing 250 yards of gravel an hour, its full potential unleashed for the first time this season.
Meanwhile, 200 feet down in Rally Valley, operator Bailey Carton battled rising groundwater as he dug deeper into the cut. What he found could change everything: bedrock.
“Now that’s bedrock rim. It’s got to be,” Rick said, inspecting the exposed layer of fine gravel. “We’re either on the best gold in this hole, or we’re very close to it. I’ve been waiting to see this for three years.”
The discovery electrified the crew. Bedrock, the natural bottom of a deposit, is where gold settles after being washed downstream for centuries. Ness believes following the rim across the valley could lead them straight to the richest line of pay dirt they’ve ever mined.
But with groundwater constantly pouring in and only one pump running, the clock is ticking. Still, morale soared after Rick shut down Monster Red for a quick check of the sluice runs.
The crew crowded around as Rick pulled back the mats—and gasps followed. Thick, gleaming nuggets spilled into the pan, some of the largest they’ve ever seen.
“That’s the biggest one yet,” Rick grinned. “Some of the nicest nuggets I’ve ever seen. We’re going to have ourselves a golden year here.”
