Kevin Beets Breaks Away, Chases Big Paydirt on His Own Terms
Just three miles from his father Tony Beets’ legendary Indian River claim, Kevin Beets is taking his first major step toward running a mine his way.
Armed with a leased 44-acre claim on Scribner Creek — and backed by every cent of his savings — the eldest Beets son has staked his future on striking Klondike gold under his own banner.
“This is a big gamble,” Kevin admitted, standing on his fresh claim with partner Faith. “But me and Faith have to make this work.”
His goal? Haul out 1,000 ounces of gold before season’s end — a haul worth over $2 million at today’s prices.
Equipment Troubles Threaten Start
But big dreams come with big obstacles. Kevin’s first task — ripping through frozen Yukon ground — hit an immediate snag when the D10 dozer, loaned by Tony, showed up without its vital ripper shank.
“A dozer without a ripper is like a truck without tires,” Kevin said. “Without it, we’re dead in the water.”
With the season clock ticking, Kevin and his newly hired foreman Brennan Rule hit the road in search of the missing piece.
A Familiar Face Lends a Hand
In a twist of fate, the quest for the elusive shank brought Brennan face-to-face with his old boss — none other than Parker Schnabel. Brennan, a former Schnabel crew foreman, parted ways with Parker six years ago under heated circumstances.
“It’ll definitely be interesting to see him in person again,” Brennan said before the unexpected reunion.
Despite past differences, Parker didn’t hesitate. “Congrats on doing this,” he told Kevin, offering the much-needed ripper shank for $11,000 — but with no upfront payment required.
“You don’t need to pay for anything now,” Parker said. “Start a tab.”
The gesture brought relief and a rare moment of camaraderie among Klondike rivals.
A New Chapter Begins
With the ripper secured, Kevin and Brennan are finally ready to rip and strip the overburden from the Lynx Cut — an 11-acre target zone Kevin believes holds his best shot at gold.
“It feels like the stars are aligning,” Brennan said.
Time will tell if the young Beets’ gamble will pay off — but for now, Kevin’s dream of running a gold mine his way is very much alive.
