MONICA BEETS’ MINING AMBITIONS PUT ON HOLD AS NEW GOLD DISCOVERY TAKES PRIORITY
In the high-stakes world of gold mining, priorities can shift in an instant. This week, Monica Beets found herself on the receiving end of an unexpected delay as her father, Tony Beets, and brother, Mike Beets, diverted their efforts to a newly discovered gold-rich deposit.
For weeks, Monica had been gearing up to mine her own cut, having secured approval to manage a 1.5-acre claim that had remained untouched for years. With a solid plan in place, equipment lined up, and a team ready to go, all she needed was a functioning pump to start draining the cut. However, Tony and Mike’s latest discovery threw a wrench in the operation.
A Golden Opportunity Can’t Be Ignored
While scouting the pit, Tony and Mike stumbled upon a rich vein of gold in a previously mined section. Layers of false bedrock masked what appears to be a highly lucrative gold deposit. Excited by the find, Tony quickly made the decision to shift resources from Monica’s claim to this new opportunity.
“If we don’t mine this now, we’ll have to wait until next year,” Tony declared, justifying the sudden change in plans.
The move was met with frustration from Monica, who had been patiently waiting her turn to mine. “How do you know my cut isn’t just as good as this one?” she challenged. However, Tony and Mike were unwilling to take the risk of leaving a sure thing for an unknown.
Delays and Disappointments
The setback means Monica will have to wait longer before she can begin working her own claim. Despite understanding the necessity of chasing guaranteed gold, she couldn’t hide her disappointment.
“It sucks being pushed back to the bottom of the list,” she admitted. “I get it happens, but it still kind of sucks.”
With a weekly gold target of 170 ounces to meet his 5,000-ounce season goal, Tony’s decision to prioritize the new discovery over Monica’s claim was purely business. The latest cleanup yielded an impressive 332 ounces of gold, valued at approximately $500,000, bringing the season total to 3,695 ounces.
Looking Ahead
For now, Monica will have to wait until the priority ground is exhausted before getting her chance. Whether her patience will pay off remains to be seen. One thing is certain—when it comes to mining in the Yukon, gold dictates the course, and family loyalties can sometimes take a backseat to the lure of the next big strike.
