On the show, Ness is a native of Michigan whose father worked in construction. After a head injury cost him a football career, he segued with a music career.
During the third season of Gold Rush, Ness was hired by Parker Schnabel. Over the years, Ness would soon become a fan-favorite on the show. By Season 9, viewers would see Ness pursue independent operations.
Ness took a hiatus from the show a few years back. When he made a return to the show, fans noticed some changes in his appearances, such as his nose.
Thanks to this, Ness has been the subject of various rumors. This has included things from him being injured during filming, undergoing cosmetic surgery, and substance abuse.
Different Factors Could Cause A Change In Someone’s Appearance
On social media, fans have often commented on the change in his appearance. Even fan sympathetic towards Ness, however, have shared their own guesses to what changed his appearance, occasionally out of concern.
As one fan asked, “What happened to Rick Ness’s nose? Looks like it got ran over by a D11 dozer and then put through the wash plant…on several occasions!”

As noted by Monsters & Critics, however, there is no concrete evidence suggesting Ness had been injured or underwent cosmetic surgery.
Ness has been open about past drug use. As noted by BBC, it is possible for certain substances, like cocaine, could hurt nasal tissues and structures.
Natarajan Balaji of University Hospital Monklands shared, “When snorted, cocaine causes the blood vessels to contract very strongly, and the nasal septum is very sensitive to reduced blood flow. After using cocaine a few times, the nasal structure can begin to die, causing perforations.”
However, Ness himself has never confirmed a connection between his past drug use and the change in his appearance. There are also other factors that could have impacted his appearance, from aging to weight fluctuations.
