The Journey of the Yukon’s Toughest Miner and His Unlikely Rise to Fame on Gold Rush

Known for his no-nonsense attitude and sharp wit, Tony Beets has become a household name in the world of gold mining. But before he was the star of Gold Rush, Tony’s journey began in a small village in Viddenis, Netherlands, where he worked on his family’s farm and dreamed of something more.

The Bold Leap to Canada

At just 23 years old, Tony packed up his life and, with his fiancée Minnie Turp, left behind his farm life for the rugged landscapes of Canada. With only $300 between them and no English skills, they set out to make a new life in British Columbia. Tony’s first job? Milking cows for $4 an hour in Salmon Arm.

“We didn’t come for a vacation. We came for a life,” Tony says, reflecting on the early days. “But I quickly realized I wanted more.”

The Yukon Calling

After hearing about the potential gold rush in Yukon in 1981, Tony made the bold decision to leave the milking parlors behind and venture to Dawson City. He found a job with Tamarak, a local gold mining company. With no experience but plenty of determination, Tony worked 14-hour days, seven days a week.

“I worked for free at first. I just wanted a shot,” Tony recalls. And that shot paid off — within months, Tony was managing equipment and overseeing operations.

Building the Beets Empire

By the time Tony and Minnie had children, the couple realized their hard work needed to evolve. Tony wasn’t just a machine operator anymore. He was a business owner. After years of grit, determination, and learning the ropes, Tony bought Tamarak, the company where his journey had begun.

Tony and Minnie’s life as miners became more than just a job — it was a lifestyle. And their children grew up surrounded by the hard work and dedication of their parents.

The Gold Rush Breakthrough

But it wasn’t until Season 2 of Gold Rush that the world was introduced to Tony Beets. Tony, who had already established himself as a respected miner in the Yukon, was sought out by Todd Hoffman, the struggling gold miner from Oregon.

In a now-infamous moment, Tony gave Todd a piece of advice that would go down in Gold Rush history:

“Drill holes, drill holes, drill holes.”

“That’s how you make money in this business,” Tony explained to Hoffman, who was known for his risky, untested gold mining techniques.

Despite the rocky start, Tony gave credit to Todd for his drive, even if it was misguided at times. “Without Todd, there wouldn’t be a Gold Rush,” Tony admits, though he’s always remained a bit guarded about his first impressions of Hoffman.

Tony Beets Today

Tony has built a legacy that spans decades. His no-nonsense attitude has earned him both admiration and occasional scorn, but his results speak for themselves. Today, Tony runs Beets Mining, a formidable operation in Dawson City, and is one of the most successful miners featured on Gold Rush.

Despite his fame, Tony stays grounded, always remembering his humble beginnings — from the fields of Holland to the gold-rich grounds of Yukon. And while his life may have changed dramatically, Tony’s roots remain as important as ever.

“It was a big leap, but it was the best decision we ever made,” says Tony, reflecting on his journey from a young farmer in the Netherlands to a gold mining legend.

A Legacy of Hard Work and Humor

In his signature style, Tony remains a man of few words but powerful actions. Whether it’s overseeing his team or joking about his legendary looks, Tony’s straightforwardness is what keeps him relevant.

“Was I always handsome? Of course. But the world wasn’t ready for this,” Tony chuckles, covering his “good looks” under a rugged exterior.

The Beets Family Legacy

Today, Tony and Minnie, along with their children, continue to run one of the most well-known operations in the Yukon. As their children take on roles in the business, it’s clear the Beets family is poised for a future in gold mining, no longer as young newcomers but as industry leaders.
