The Untold Truth About ‘Gold Rush’ Star – Rick Ness: Musician, Miner, Maverick

With his rugged charm, distinctive style, and hard-earned place in the Alaskan gold fields, Gold Rush star Rick Ness has proven he’s much more than just a supporting act. From a bass player in a touring band to one of the Discovery Channel’s most recognizable gold miners, Ness has lived a life of bold pivots and big gambles.

Born March 5, 1981, in Michigan, Rick Ness grew up with his twin brother Randy and was active in both music and sports. A promising football career was cut short due to injury, and soon Rick found himself working heavy machinery in the family’s construction business. That early training unknowingly set the stage for a future in mining.

In 2003, Rick and his mother Judy moved to Milwaukee, where he pursued music full-time, joining the band .357 String Band as their upright bassist. The group released three albums before disbanding in 2011, which led to Rick’s next chapter: gold mining.

While touring with the band, Rick met fellow miner Parker Schnabel. Months later, Schnabel called out of the blue, offering Rick a job for Gold Rush Season 3. With only 12 days to decide, Rick packed his truck and drove north—marking the start of his mining career.

Over six seasons, Rick rose to become Parker’s right-hand man. But in Season 8, he took a leap of faith—leaving Parker’s crew to start his own mining operation. “It was scary,” Rick admitted. “I had everything I owned on the line.” Still, he built his own crew from close friends back in Wisconsin and struck gold—literally—mining 1,105 ounces worth $1.3 million in his first season as a boss.

His leadership style, rooted in loyalty and grit, has kept viewers hooked. He may have lost over a million dollars in later seasons, but Rick’s resilience continues to define him. As of mid-2020, his net worth remains around $3 million.

Rick keeps much of his personal life private, though he was once rumored to be involved with crew member Carla Ann. In 2018, he suffered a major personal loss when his mother Judy passed away after a battle with cancer. Her death came just before the ninth season began filming. Rick pressed on, dedicating the season to her memory and caring for her dog, Ruby.

Outside of mining, Rick still embraces his creative and adventurous side—he’s a tattoo enthusiast, a biker, and remains active on Instagram and Twitter, where fans get a glimpse of both the miner and the man.

As the gold fields keep testing his limits, Rick Ness keeps showing the heart of a fighter. And in the rough, unpredictable terrain of life and mining, he’s still digging deep.
