From Trucking to ‘Shining: Richard Landry’s Rise on Discovery’s Moonshiners

Louisiana, USA — For Richard Landry, moonshining began not as a family tradition but as a newfound passion. A professional truck driver from Louisiana, Landry had never considered himself a distiller until 2011, when he tuned in to the first season of Moonshiners on Discovery Channel. What began as curiosity soon evolved into a full-fledged craft — and eventually, national recognition.

Landry built his first makeshift still in his backyard, dedicating years to studying the science of distilling. He experimented with bold flavors, from Louisiana-inspired blends to exotic twists. “It wasn’t something I just jumped into,” he later said, describing his approach as equal parts science and culinary art.

His dedication paid off in 2019 when he competed on Moonshiners: Master Distiller, a spin-off series that pits amateur and professional distillers against one another. Facing a third-generation moonshiner and a professional biochemist, Landry surprised many by taking first place. His winning recipe — a cherry bounce with rich, vivid flavor — “blew the judges away” and earned him the coveted title of Master Distiller.

Following that victory, Landry joined the cast of Moonshiners in 2020. Alongside him came his younger brother Craig, whom he introduced to the trade. Together, the Landry brothers became fan favorites, known for their experimental blends such as cotton candy, sweet potato and cranberry, and Louisiana’s own yaupon tea. Their inventive spirits earned Richard the nickname “The Spice King.”

The Landry brothers’ rise has also carried cultural significance. As the first African-American cast members on Moonshiners, they’ve inspired audiences across the country. “I realized my work goes beyond just making liquor,” Richard reflected. “It shows people that no matter who you are or where you’re from, anyone can shine.”

Since his debut in season 11, Richard has continued to push boundaries. His standout creations include the deep red “Bloody Mary” shine, and he has since competed in the Master Distiller: Tournament of Champions and returned for season 12 of the flagship series.

Despite growing fame, the brothers remain grounded. “It’s a blessing and a dream come true,” Richard says. “We’re just grateful to share our passion.”

Fans can continue to follow Richard Landry and the rest of the cast of Moonshiners on the Discovery Channel, where tradition, innovation, and a touch of rebellion meet under the cover of night.
