In 2013, fueled by the financial boost from his growing TV fame, Smith finally realized his dream of launching a legitimate spirits company. His flagship brand, Climax Spirits, is named after his hometown of Climax, Virginia. The product line includes traditional moonshine, whiskey, and the notable “Climax Fire No. 32”—a cinnamon-spiced homage to Smith’s service with the local fire department.
Smith’s entrepreneurial spirit didn’t stop there. His Southern Reserve label adds bourbon and rye whiskey to the mix, and in 2024 he introduced a honey raspberry-flavored whiskey to capitalize on the trending market for flavored spirits.

Introduced to distilling at the tender age of six, he grew up regarding it not as contraband, but as tradition—and even as medicine, according to local folklore. Despite stepping away from the illegal side of distilling, Smith has remained a consistent presence on Moonshiners, appearing in all 13 seasons to date, including the latest in early 2024. He’s also starred in spin-offs like American Spirit, Master Distiller, and Master Distiller: Tournament of Champions.
