MIND-BLOWING Reason Cops Raided Moonshiner Tim Smith’s Home

Whether you love it or hate it, Moonshiners has carved out a permanent spot as one of Discovery Channel’s most iconic reality series. Blending backwoods traditions with rebellious spirit, the show has offered a rare glimpse into America’s legendary (and supposedly illicit) craft of backyard liquor making — and no one embodies that legacy more than fan-favorite Tim Smith.

But for years, rumors have swirled: Was Tim’s house really raided? Is he still secretly running illegal stills in the woods? And how much of Moonshiners is even real?

📌 So, was Tim’s house actually raided?
According to Smith himself, police did enter his property looking for evidence tied to alleged illegal distilling early in the show’s run. However, no official raid or arrest followed — and at the time, Tim says he had already retired from illegal operations.

📌 Why go legal?
For decades, Tim resisted going legit, fearing government taxes and oversight. But after losing his father in a car accident, Smith realized he didn’t want to spend his life running from the law. In 2013, he finally made the leap, licensing his recipes and launching Climax Spirits — named for his hometown of Climax, Virginia.

Today, Tim’s product line includes his signature moonshine, whiskeys, and even cinnamon-spiced fire liquor. Most recently, in September 2024, he expanded into flavored spirits with a honey raspberry whiskey, embracing the booming demand for craft-infused moonshines.

📌 Family tradition in a jar
Distilling wasn’t a rebellious act for Smith — it was a birthright. Taught the craft by his father at just six years old, Tim says moonshine was more medicine than mischief in his childhood home. While his dad never let him drink it, he did teach him how to make it — and sell it.

📌 Still shining on TV
Despite the controversies — and claims the show is staged — Tim Smith remains one of Moonshiners’ longest-standing stars, appearing in every season, including its latest, Season 13, which premiered earlier this year. He’s also featured in spin-offs like American Spirit, Master Distiller, and Master Distiller: Tournament of Champions.

📌 Online and unstoppable
With nearly 40,000 Instagram followers, a booming legal spirits business, and a loyal fan base that loves him for his old-school charm and distilling know-how, Smith’s moonshining days may be legal now — but his rebel spirit still burns bright.

So, is Moonshiners real or fake? For Tim Smith, the answer doesn’t really matter anymore. He’s proof that sometimes you can go legit without losing your roots.
