Richard Landry: An Award-Winning Distiller Featured in A “Moonshiners” Spin-off
Richard Landry is not your average reality television star. A professional truck driver turned master distiller, Landry has quickly become one of the most celebrated personalities on Discovery Channel’s Moonshiners, captivating fans with his bold flavors, humble attitude, and inspiring journey into the world of craft liquor.
First airing in 2011, Moonshiners is a documentary-style series that dives deep into the lives of American distillers—often illegal ones—operating in the remote Appalachian Mountains. The show has since evolved into a major hit, spawning multiple spin-offs, including Moonshiners: Whiskey Business and Moonshiners: Master Distiller. It was the latter that opened the door for Richard Landry.
A Newcomer with a Natural Gift
Hailing from Louisiana, Landry didn’t grow up in the traditional moonshining scene that defines much of Moonshiners’ Appalachian cast. In fact, his interest in distilling began only after watching the show’s debut season in 2011. Captivated by the blend of science, tradition, and creativity, he built a small still in his backyard and taught himself the craft.
“It wasn’t something I just jumped into,” Landry has said. “It took study, mistakes, and a lot of passion to get it right.”
Over the next decade, Landry refined his skills, focusing on complex, Southern-inspired flavor profiles. His dedication paid off when he was invited to compete in Moonshiners: Master Distiller in 2019. Pitted against a third-generation distiller and a professional biochemist, Landry remained focused—and triumphed.
His winning batch? A bold, cherry bounce spirit that wowed the judges and earned him the coveted title of Master Distiller.
A Star Is Born
The win propelled Landry into the main series, where he debuted in Season 11 alongside his brother Craig, who joined him as his distilling partner. Together, the Landry Brothers brought fresh energy and flavor to the show, not only in the literal sense.
Their moonshine blends became immediate fan favorites, from nostalgic cotton candy to an inventive sweet potato–cranberry fusion. But it was Richard’s Louisiana roots that most often defined his distilling style. One standout concoction featured manglier—a bitter tea leaf native to Louisiana and known for its medicinal properties. The bold risk paid off, with fans dubbing him the Spice King.
In Season 12, Landry returned stronger than ever, making appearances on Master Distiller: Tournament of Champions and introducing one of his most iconic creations yet: the deep red, peppery-sweet Bloody Mary Shine.
Making History and Breaking Ground
Beyond his skill, Landry has earned admiration as the first—and still only—African-American cast member in the show’s history. He and Craig have not only stood out as talented distillers, but also as role models, inspiring viewers from all backgrounds to pursue their passions.
“To me, it’s bigger than moonshine,” Landry said in an interview. “It’s about showing people that no matter where you’re from, if you have a dream and a fire in your gut, you can shine too.”
Despite rising fame, the Landry brothers remain grounded and grateful. Their humble approach and family-first attitude have endeared them to fans and fellow distillers alike.
Catch the Shine
Richard Landry continues to push the limits of flavor and tradition on Discovery’s Moonshiners, with new episodes airing this season. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a curious newcomer, his journey is proof that with passion, grit, and a little bit of spice, anyone can craft something extraordinary.
