The World of Tim Smith Revealed: His Life, Marriage, and Million-Dollar Empire, and the Truth About the Road
Tim Smith: From Reality TV Star to Moonshine Mogul
Tim Smith, an actor from Virginia, gained fame as the character “Moonshiner” on Moonshiners, the Discovery Channel docudrama that aired from 2011 to 2025. He’s also the founder of Climax Moonshine, a legal moonshine brand he launched in 2013.
Coming from a family of moonshiners, Tim was naturally drawn to the trade, learning the ropes at a young age. Though little is known about his early life and education, he began making moonshine in his teens to carry on his father’s legacy. His experience and charisma earned him a leading role on Moonshiners, which followed individuals producing illegal alcohol in the Appalachian region.
Despite legal controversy surrounding the show, the Virginia ABC Bureau stated they would take action if any laws were broken. Tim’s authenticity made him one of the most recognized figures on the show, appearing in 75 episodes alongside others like Tickle, Popcorn Sutton, and Jeff.
While filming, Tim transitioned into legal production, founding Climax Moonshine. He now owns liquor stores across several states, including Georgia, Tennessee, West Virginia, and South Carolina, operating mainly out of Kentucky. His success has reportedly earned him a net worth of around $500,000.
Outside moonshining, Tim is the chief of the Climax Volunteer Fire Department in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, where he’s served since 1986. His wife Shelby and their son J.T.—an aspiring firefighter—also contribute to the department.
Though not active on social media personally, his brand Climax Spirits has over 10,000 followers on Twitter and continues to grow. Recently, Tim introduced a new product: Climax Whiskey Wood Fired.
Blending tradition with entrepreneurship, Tim Smith has built a fulfilling life as a beloved moonshiner, businessman, and community figure.
