Excavation at Smith’s Cove has not been without difficulties. Tunnel collapses, flooding, and shifts in the boreholes have repeatedly slowed progress. Precision is critical, particularly when drilling near historic shafts, such as the infamous Shaft 6, which collapsed over a century ago. Tor Martin, a geophysical survey expert, monitors drilling with advanced gyroscopic tools to ensure the team maintains accuracy.

Despite these challenges, the team’s determination remains strong. Daily routines at the site mix methodical research with hard labor, as team members carefully uncover each layer of history, cataloging every artifact and anomaly found.

The discovery of the triangular gap in the mud at Smith’s Cove has further fueled excitement. Water flowing through this opening appears to be part of an ancient drainage system, perhaps one designed to protect the Money Pit. The presence of coconut fiber in the drain—a material historically noted as a filter in these traps—suggests that the Laginas’ team may be closing in on clues left by the island’s original builders.

“Each find is a step closer, even if it’s just understanding the island’s past,” said Rick Lagina. “Oak Island is as challenging as it is fascinating. You never know what the next layer might reveal.”
