The Curse of Oak Island

Leather Shoe Fragments Raise Historical Questions ?!

Oak Island’s relentless search for hidden treasure has taken an intriguing turn as Rick Lagina and his team have uncovered a series of historical artifacts in the swamp, suggesting a rich and complex past. The latest discoveries—a slate and brick vault-like structure, wooden survey stakes, cobblestone pathways, and iron tools—are fueling speculation that valuable relics might still be buried beneath the surface.

New Clues Emerge in the Swamp

The team’s efforts in the northern region of the swamp led to the discovery of a wooden survey stake, distinct in its axe-cut markings. Jack Begley and Katya Drayton identified multiple stakes in close proximity, suggesting a structured survey system in place centuries ago. As their search progressed, they uncovered what appeared to be an iron spike and a possible chisel—tools that could be linked to past excavation or construction efforts on the island.

Rick Lagina, reflecting on the significance of these finds, remarked, “Obviously, we’re looking for treasure, but we’re also looking for clues to the treasure. These items might be highly relevant to many things. Who was here? When was the work done?”

Leather Shoe Fragments Raise Historical Questions

In a separate but related discovery, the team unearthed pieces of leather shoes and boots, some of which were remarkably well-preserved. The artifacts were taken to expert Joe Landry, who determined that the leather likely dates between 1830 and 1900 and was oak-tanned—a process used for durable work boots. Landry noted, “This almost sort of gives the impression of being like a military boot.”

Anthony Graves: A Man with a Mystery

The timeline of these finds coincides with the period when Anthony Graves, a 19th-century farmer who owned much of Oak Island, mysteriously came into possession of Spanish silver coins. Graves, though not known to have actively searched for treasure, reportedly used these coins for transactions on the mainland, leading to speculation about his secret wealth.

Craig Tester connected the dots between the vault and Graves, stating, “It indicates, probably, Anthony Graves’s time period. And they were found not far from the vault in the swamp.” This revelation raises the possibility that Graves may have stumbled upon hidden riches—possibly even from the same vault the team recently uncovered.

What Lies Ahead?

The team remains hopeful that these recent discoveries will guide them to something even more valuable. The presence of cobblestone pathways and tool fragments suggests a concerted effort to construct or conceal something significant. As the search intensifies, Rick Lagina remains determined: “Each clue leads to another clue. So, ultimately, hopefully, we’ll get a more complete understanding of the story of the bog.”

With metal detectors in hand and spirits high, the Oak Island team presses on, searching for the next piece of the puzzle that could finally reveal the island’s long-held secrets.
