The Curse of Oak Island

New Evidence Emerges on Oak Island — Could This Be the Breakthrough Centuries in the Making?

For more than two centuries, Oak Island has fascinated historians, explorers and television audiences alike. This season, that intrigue escalated dramatically after Rick Lagina revealed that the team had encountered something that left even him unsettled: a mystery tunnel of unknown origin, direction or purpose.

“This one is a mystery tunnel,” Rick said. “We don’t know where it goes. We don’t know who did it. We don’t know why.”

The discovery marks one of the most perplexing developments in the island’s modern exploration and has intensified speculation about what may lie beneath the fabled Money Pit.

A Frightening Find Beneath the Garden Shaft

The latest revelation emerged as the team completed the reconstruction of the historic Garden Shaft, a major engineering effort that had dominated Season 10. Just before winter forced operations to halt, officials from Dumas detected an unexplained tunnel roughly 10 feet beneath the base of the shaft.

Rick and Marty Lagina descended into the shaft to examine the anomaly. The moment carried immense symbolism, connecting them to generations of treasure hunters who walked similar paths in search of the island’s secrets.

At the suspected tunnel depth, metal-detection specialist Gary Drayton swept the sodden ground. When his detector emitted a sudden high-pitched signal indicating non-ferrous metals—possibly silver or copper—the team recognised the potential significance immediately. After years of incremental progress, this small but striking clue hinted that a breakthrough might be near.

Blue Clay Discovery Suggests Hidden Engineering

Attention soon shifted to Lot 13, northeast of the swamp, where excavators unearthed a thick deposit of blue clay just four feet below the surface. While seemingly mundane, the clay carried major implications.

Blue clay was famously encountered during the 1804 excavation of the Money Pit. It acts as a natural sealant, preventing water from seeping into subterranean structures. Its reappearance in Lot 13—and again in 2018 during exploration of the Eye of the Swamp—suggests that these areas may be connected parts of a larger engineered system.

Dr Ian Spooner, the team’s geological expert, confirmed that the clay layers and surrounding rock configurations did not match natural geological patterns. Instead, they showed evidence of deliberate placement, including heat-treated clays and carefully stacked stone formations.

These findings have fortified theories that Oak Island’s swamp, its quadrilateral structures and the Money Pit may all form interconnected components of a larger, purpose-built complex.

Ancient Well Yields New Clues

On Lot 26, excavation of the island’s centuries-old stone well—believed to be nearly 900 years old—produced another intriguing artifact: an 18th-century hand-forged nail, potentially from a wooden sailing vessel. High levels of silver detected in the well water only deepened questions about its original use.

Was the well part of a concealed entryway? A storage chamber? Or a waypoint for those who built the island’s subterranean systems?

Although chemist Dr Christa Brosseau cautioned against overinterpretation of the nail itself, the structure’s age and preservation continue to raise important historical questions.

Swamp Yields a Brass Handle With Maritime Links

Elsewhere, in the triangular swamp, metal-detection work led by Gary Drayton revealed a brass door handle. While at face value a simple household item, its design suggests maritime origins—potentially belonging to a ship’s storage cabinet or cargo container.

Given the long-standing theories that the swamp may conceal remnants of a shipwreck or a deliberately scuttled vessel, the find revived debate about whether the swamp holds artifacts brought to the island for safekeeping.

International Clues Point Toward the Knights Templar

In parallel, Rick and Marty Lagina travelled to Camerata, Italy, following leads pointing to the Knights Templar. Rumours have long linked the medieval order to Oak Island, alleging that they transported sacred relics across Europe and possibly across the Atlantic.

Inside volcanic cave systems, the team discovered carvings and a stone cross bearing striking similarities to the lead cross previously found on Smith’s Cove. Further into the Grande Simonetti cave, Alex Lagina and Peter Fornetti identified a symbol matching engravings on the mysterious “host stone” recovered years earlier on Oak Island.

These parallels have renewed speculation about a possible Templar presence—or influence—on the island.

Roman Coins Deepen the Historical Puzzle

Adding yet more complexity, several Roman coins have been uncovered on Oak Island. Their presence raises questions about whether ancient European materials arrived through maritime trade, ballast deposits, or even pre-Columbian transatlantic voyages.

While experts are divided, the discoveries continue to open new lines of inquiry about who may have visited the island centuries before modern exploration began.

A Story Still Waiting for Its Ending

From mystery tunnels and blue clay barriers to ancient wells, possible Templar symbols and Roman coins, each discovery adds a new chapter to Oak Island’s sprawling narrative. Yet the central questions persist: Who engineered the island’s elaborate underground systems? What were they hiding? And is the long-sought treasure still buried beneath its shifting layers?

Despite mounting evidence, the ultimate answer remains elusive.

For Rick and Marty Lagina, the mission continues with the same priorities they have emphasised for a decade: safety, sustainability and a steadfast commitment to unravelling the truth.

And with every new find—whether a metal signal in the Garden Shaft or a centuries-old artifact at the swamp—the island offers one more hint that its greatest revelation may yet be ahead.
