The Curse of Oak Island

The Untold Truth About David Blankenship from “The Curse of Oak Island”

Since its 2014 debut, History’s The Curse of Oak Island has followed brothers Rick and Marty Lagina as they hunt for legendary treasure. A standout member of their team is David “Dave” Blankenship, known for his hardworking spirit, unfiltered commentary, and carrying on his father Dan’s legacy after Dan’s death in 2019.

David has been involved with Oak Island far longer than the Laginas. He joined his father Dan there in 1972 and has lived and worked on the island for decades. Their deep knowledge of the site made them essential partners when the Laginas began their search in 2006.

Link to the Famous Reader’s Digest Article David’s connection to Oak Island traces back to the 1965 Reader’s Digest article “Oak Island’s Mysterious ‘Money Pit.'” The piece inspired young Rick Lagina, but it also motivated David’s father, Dan, to leave his contracting career in Florida and move to Nova Scotia. David eventually followed.

A Fresh Start After Divorce David has always kept his personal life private. He has revealed that he moved to the island after going through a divorce. Concerned about his son’s well-being, Dan invited him to work on Oak Island. In a History interview, David bluntly said he came up “after a divorce” when his father thought he “was a drunk,” and ended up staying for 30 years. He now enjoys the quiet island life.

A Life-Changing Accident Despite a severe injury, David remains known for his strong work ethic. In 1986, while working as a steelworker, a snapped crane cable struck him, throwing him 46 feet into the crane’s cab. The impact caused a stroke when his hard hat strap pinched an artery. He had to relearn how to walk and talk. The accident left him with permanent nerve damage and paralysis on his left side, which explains his noticeable limp.

Retirement and Reported Tensions David appeared regularly until Season 8, when fans noticed his absence. In a 2021 Drilling Down special, he announced his retirement to spend more time with family following his father’s death. While the show portrayed the departure as amicable, reports suggest underlying tension. David reportedly felt the producers were not properly honoring his father’s legacy on the island.

Through decades of dedication, injuries, and personal challenges, David Blankenship has become one of the most authentic and beloved figures in the long history of Oak Island’s treasure hunt.
