Aussie Gold Maps Shaken as Mahoney Unearths Game-Changing Discovery
Western Australia – Gold prospector and television personality Tyler Mahoney has made an extraordinary discovery, unearthing her first ironstone gold lode in a story that perfectly captures the thrill of prospecting.
THE DISCOVERY BEGINS
While prospecting on one of her leases, Tyler’s father climbed a hill for phone reception. On his way down, he swung his detector and hit an ironstone specimen containing gold. Excited by the find, he called in Tyler’s brother, who began systematically searching the area, revealing a clear pattern of nuggets leading down the hill.
Tyler soon joined the search, carefully detecting in expanding circles to ensure no gold was missed. As the sun set, she uncovered a faint but deep signal beneath a dead tree. Experienced in the subtle tones of a detector, she knew it could be something significant. Digging deeper, she hit cap rock—an indication that the target wasn’t surface trash but something far more valuable.
THE BIG REVEAL
With her brother assisting, Tyler carefully chipped through the hardened rock. The signal grew stronger, confirming they had found something remarkable. Exhausted but exhilarated, she radioed her father, urging him to come and see for himself. He hesitated at first but quickly changed his mind after hearing the detector’s unmistakable tone.
As they continued excavating, ironstone specimens with visible gold emerged from the ground. The realization hit—this wasn’t just another patch of gold, but an entire ironstone vein. They had uncovered a primary source of gold, shedding light on where previous nuggets had originated.
EXTRACTING THE GOLD
Since the site was on their lease, the team was able to use a jackhammer to fully expose the reef. The ironstone was removed and crushed, and the gold was extracted using a gold cube and panning process. In total, the discovery yielded around 40 ounces of gold, not including the nuggets and specimens that had already eroded from the reef over time.
A PROSPECTOR’S DREAM
For Tyler Mahoney, this discovery was not just about the gold—it was the fulfillment of a lifelong passion. Remarkably, 15 years earlier, she had played on this very land as a child, riding motorbikes and exploring. To return as a full-time prospector and make such a significant find was a full-circle moment.
“This is why we do it,” Tyler said, holding a gold-filled specimen. “This feeling, this excitement—it’s what prospecting is all about.”
Her discovery stands as a testament to persistence, skill, and an unwavering connection to the land—an unforgettable chapter in her gold prospecting journey.
