Top Gear star Richard Hammond walks away with over £50,000

Richard Hammond, the famed presenter of both BBC’s Top Gear and Prime Video’s The Grand Tour, has recently walked away with an impressive sum of over £50,000 after selling off a selection of cars from his personal collection. Known for his two-decade-long career alongside his co-stars Jeremy Clarkson and James May, the 56-year-old television personality has cemented himself as one of the most recognizable faces in the world of motoring.

Hammond’s sale was part of an event earlier this year, where he decided to part with four vehicles that had become an integral part of his personal collection. These cars were showcased at the Race Retro Show, an event that gathers automotive enthusiasts from around the globe. At the end of the auction, the presenter’s total haul reached £56,025, far exceeding expectations.

Among the vehicles he sold, the 1933 Riley 14/6 Alpine Tourer commanded the highest price. This classic car fetched an impressive £25,875, a testament to its age, quality, and Hammond’s careful ownership. The second highest sale was his 1972 MG B GT Race Car, a car that holds special significance as the final one he drove on Top Gear. This iconic race car brought in £16,875, making it a highly sought-after piece for collectors and fans of the show alike. Lastly, his 2006 MINI Cooper S, which rounded out the collection, went for £13,275, contributing to the overall total that exceeded £50,000.

The sale was conducted by Rob Hubbard, the managing director and principal auctioneer at Iconic Auctioneers. Hubbard commented on the success of the auction, explaining, “The market is selective, but when cars are presented properly, estimated sensibly, and backed by complete history, buyers respond. From homologation specials of the 1990s to genuine touring car icons and modern performance heroes, we saw depth of bidding across every part of the Sale.” The event’s success was a clear indication of the continued interest in rare and well-maintained cars, especially when tied to a beloved figure like Richard Hammond.

Looking forward, Hubbard mentioned the excitement surrounding future sales, particularly the upcoming Supercar Fest in May, where they anticipate similar success and the opportunity to showcase more remarkable cars. Fans of The Grand Tour and Top Gear will likely continue to watch for the next chapter in Hammond’s automotive journey, where his passion for cars and motorsport undoubtedly remains at the forefront.
