Wild Bill Wichrowski: Battling Cancer in the World’s Deadliest Waters

For over a decade, Captain William “Wild Bill” Wichrowski has been one of the most recognizable faces on Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch. Known for his gruff charisma, fearless attitude, and iron-willed determination aboard the Summer Bay, Wichrowski has navigated some of the planet’s most treacherous seas. But in 2023, he confronted a storm he could not steer around: a diagnosis of prostate cancer.

The news came at the end of Season 19, when Wichrowski shared the diagnosis publicly with fans who had followed his career since he joined the show in Season 13 in 2017. For a man who had built his identity around physical toughness and self-reliance, it was a deeply personal admission — and one that spoke volumes about his character.

“If you have symptoms, get checked. I seem to be cancer-free now — but the clock has caught up with me.”

Treatment began immediately. Wichrowski underwent radioactive seed implantation, a technique in which tiny radioactive pellets are placed directly into the prostate to destroy cancer cells, combined with hormone therapy to suppress testosterone levels — the fuel that prostate cancer feeds on. The side effects were significant. In a candid Facebook post that quickly spread among his fanbase, he acknowledged that the hormone treatment drops testosterone to near zero by design, and that the physical toll was unlike anything the Bering Sea had thrown at him.

“I have always felt 10 to 15 years younger than my age. The job I have, and being around crew half my age — it keeps you young,” he wrote. “The hormone treatment feels like the clock has finally caught up. Maybe a small price to pay.” The message resonated deeply with fans and fellow captains alike, many of whom praised him for speaking openly about a condition that men often suffer in silence.

By early 2025, the news turned cautiously optimistic. Wichrowski updated followers that his numbers were “great” and that he appeared to be cancer-free — a remarkable turnaround that he credited to early detection and consistent treatment. In a parting shot of characteristic Wild Bill humor and humility, he added: “Not complaining — purely for information.” His decision to go public was not simply self-expression. It was advocacy. He urged any man experiencing urinary symptoms, discomfort, or other warning signs to stop delaying and see a doctor. In a demographic notorious for avoiding healthcare, his words carried real weight.

The health battle has had a direct impact on his television career. Ahead of Season 21 of Deadliest Catch, Discovery confirmed that Wichrowski would not be appearing in the new episodes — a significant absence for a show that has leaned on his personality for years. However, Season 22, premiering May 8, 2026, marks his return to the screen. According to the network, Wild Bill will be heading to St. George Island to share his decades of hard-earned knowledge with the next generation of crab fishermen — a fitting role for a man in the reflective, legacy-conscious chapter of his life.

His return to television is not just a comeback — it’s a statement that the sea, and life itself, is worth fighting for.

Wichrowski’s story resonates beyond the world of commercial fishing. It is a story about vulnerability, about a man who spent his career projecting invincibility learning to ask for help and accept treatment. It is also a reminder that even the toughest among us are not immune to illness — and that the bravest thing a person can do is not ignore what the body is telling them. Whether steering through a Force 10 gale or navigating a cancer ward, Wild Bill Wichrowski has faced each challenge the same way: straight on, no shortcuts, with the kind of stubborn optimism that makes for great television — and, apparently, great medicine too.
